Tigers Chris Newman, Nathan Foley push case for selection against Fremantle

RICHMOND could be boosted by the returns of skipper Chris Newman and key midfielder Nathan Foley, along with wayward star Ben Cousins, for its trip to Perth to play Fremantle on Sunday.

Newman missed the Tigers' 55-point loss to Melbourne last Sunday - the club's fourth defeat from as many games this season - with a hamstring complaint.

But he trained strongly yesterday and appears set for an immediate return.

Foley hasn't played since suffering an ankle injury in Round 14 last year. He suffered a setback during the pre-season but has played the past two weeks in the VFL.

"He has done everything right and is champing at the bit to play," Richmond football operations manager Ross Monaghan told Fairfax media.

"We've been cautious with him because he is such a valuable commodity, but we'd obviously like to get him up and playing sooner rather than later."

The Tigers will weigh up this week whether to recall Cousins, Luke McGuane and Dean Polo, who all played at Coburg last weekend as punishment for their part in Sydney hotel fracas that led to an eight-week ban for teammate Daniel Connors.

Cousins had 28 disposals but didn't dominate at VFL level.

"I got a little bit of the footy but no world records," he said on Nova FM.

"We've got a number of guys in the (VFL) side who are pressing for selection, so it will be interesting to see what happens this week.

"We've got one of the biggest challenges in football at the moment, to go over and play Fremantle at Subiaco Oval. Back in the wild, wild west … it will be a good challenge."

Foley will play for Coburg this week.  He should be brought in to play Geelong when we really need him.  He'll either free up Lids by taking Ling's tag or be free to burst out of the centre if Lids gets the tag.
