The draft in November is probably the most important thing for us this year.

Barden blows away Calder

    * Sam Landsberger
    * From: Herald Sun
    * March 29, 2010

NORTHERN Knights scored the first upset of the TAC Cup season, rebounding from a 17-point halftime deficit to defeat Calder by 13 points at Visy Park yesterday.

Lively forward Darcy Barden booted three second-half goals from 18 touches and six marks, impressing Knights coach Anthony Allen.

"(Barden) kicked an absolute gem on the run from outside 50. He's a big, strong boy who loves a physical contest, (he's) a real workhorse," Allen said.

Barden was well supported by Jack Newnes and captain Josh Caddy.

Cannons coach Marty Allison was impressed by the Knights' work-rate and dominance of the contested ball.

"If we had kicked straight, we could have stolen the game, but it would have been a steal, Allison said.

"We were really disappointed, but we'll take a lot out of the game."

Caddy and Calder star Tom Liberatore went head-to-head for much of the match in an intriguing contest, with both players having an impact.

But it was Calder midfielder Dion Prestia's game which caught Allison's eye.

"(Prestia) has a lot of class and he showed it all. He picked up more than 30 touches and oozed class all day," Allison said.

Greater Western Sydney had a bye in Round 1, while the Dandenong Stingrays dismantled Gippsland by 82 points.

Thirteen players kicked goals for Dandenong, while vice-captain Andrew McInnes tore the Power midfield apart.

Gippsland forward Dean MacDonald kicked four of his side's eight goals.

Oakleigh Chargers cruised past Sandringham by 47 points, but will lose exciting midfielder Andrew Gaff. Gaff again played well, but will play International Rules overseas before returning to play for Carey Grammar.

"Andrew has had a great two weeks. He was outstanding and when he needs to produce he produces," Chargers coach Steve Grace said.

Oakleigh smashed the Dragons in the inside-50 count, 56-34, and Sam Crocker's work-rate earned Grace's praise as he ran hard all day from the wing.

An eight-goal third quarter from Eastern Ranges paved the way for a 34-point win against the Western Jets at Visy Park.

Eastern coach Darren Bewick said his side started to listen to instructions after halftime and as a result kicked clear.

Bottom-age wingman Stephen Scott impressed Bewick with his efforts, as did forward Jonathon Patton.

"Patton kicked a couple, but his work-rate was fantastic," Bewick said.

"It was a scrappy first half in which I thought Western were really good. But we were able to kick away, which was pleasing."

On Saturday, Geelong Falcons scored a 116-point away win at Bendigo.

Billy Smedts and Josh Walker combined for 11 goals and the game was as good as over by the first break.

Wade Hancock kicked five goals for the Pioneers.

Bendigo has a week off, while Geelong must again travel, this time to Warrnambool, to take on North Ballarat.
