Tigers eye other avenue for Bacharrichmondfc.com.au

Mon 11 Oct, 2010With Richmond unable to seal a deal with Essendon for Bachar Houli, before the 2pm deadline on the final day of the AFL’s trade period, the Tigers will now weigh up the available options to secure his services.
“There are a couple of options - obviously, the National Draft, or the Pre-season Draft - so we just have to sit down and work out which is the best one,” Richmond General Manager of Football, Craig Cameron told “AFL Trade Week Radio”.
“We’ve already spoken to Bachar and his management group, ESP - we were in contact with them all through the week. It’s just a matter of us now working out the best way forward for Bachar to become a Richmond player.”
Cameron claimed there was no ill-feeling between the two clubs over the inability to strike a deal at the trade table for Houli.
“I think the difficulty was that both Essendon and ourselves finished so close together on the ladder,” he said.
“So trying to do a deal, even something like swapping picks, didn’t really make much sense to either party, but particularly to the Bombers, because we were so close (ladder position). And, they probably also felt that our third-round selection may not be as useful to them, as it would have been in other years.
“It was one of those situations where both clubs offered things up, but it just missed the mark a little bit, and he’s going to end up going through the Pre-season or, maybe, the National Draft.”
Cameron said Richmond, through its List Manager, Blair Hartley, had targeted both Houli, and Shaun Grigg, who was snared in a trade with Carlton on the weekend.
“Blair has been a great acquisition for us. He did a lot of work all year in preparing for trade week, and one of the things we identified is that we needed a few more midfielders, who, in Bachar’s case, could play mid as well as forward, and in Shaun Grigg’s case, mid, and probably a little bit back as well.
“With the change in the interchange rules, it’s going to be important to have players with good engines, who can stay on the ground, rather than having to be rotated quite often. Both of them (Grigg and Houli) have got big engines, and both can play mid, as well as other positions, so they’ll be important to us.”
