Draft countdown - Richmond

WHAT the Tigers need and who they're likely to get in Thursday's national draft.

DRAFT PICKS

6, 30, 47, 51, 63, 79, 94 (PR)

WHAT THEY NEED

Got to be happy with the midfield. Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin will play 200 games each.

But there are problems up forward and down back.

The Tigers clearly need more help for Jack Riewoldt, with a mid-sized leading option an absolute must.

Down back, they don't have enough muscle. A key defender capabale of blossoming into a real grunt player would be handy.

WHAT THEY MIGHT GET

Prepare for the smile on Jack Riewoldt's face when the Tigers pick Jared Polec at No 6.

The South Aussie is an electrifying talent, capable of kicking goals in a rush from a wing.

Think Ryan Griffen the way he slips through traffic and excels hitting targets by foot inside 50m.

RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES

Brad Miller is training at Punt Rd.

LATE MAIL

Classy flanker Viv Michie is a matchwinner. Plays either end and hurts the opposition with precise foot skills. Likely to go around the pick No.30 mark.

I'd prefer Caddy. He'd make our midfield the best in the afl within 2 years.
We have some pretty good options for the small half forward role. Morton, King and Houli will compete for 2 spots. Morton moved to the wing late last year after volunteering to go to Coburg for several weeks to learn to play midfield. Before Round 5 he played all 4 games and about 17 or 18 in each of the previous 2 seasons in the forward pocket kicking about 85 goals for us. That's a very good effort from about 40 games and usually playing as our 2nd tall, but he'll be our 4th tall now and should dominate. He'll either play on a forward flank or wing. King was always going to be a fairly good small forward. The only problem was that he was played in defence for his first 2 years and being such a risk taker trying dangerous kicks he'd get us in trouble sometimes. But up forward he can be damaging. His kicking is pretty good but when you take risks and it doesn't pay off in defence it doesn't look good at all. He'll fight for his spot with Houli who should surprise alot. We should play the promising Post at CHF and Griffiths(who's over 100kg now) in the FP as much as possible and they'll support Jack alot even if they only touch it 10 times each. That will leave us with the other FP to be occupied by Taylor or Hicks. With the drafting of another small forward we'll be fine up forward imo.
The ever improving Edwards and Grigg(although I wish we kept Collins) on the wings.
I think our defence will be pretty strong now that our midfield is strong and we are rising up the ladder and not putting our defenders under the most pressure in the afl. Astbury already looks 95kg or more since coming back for the preseason. With him at CHB and Mcguane probably at FB who will be about 93kg by the start of the 2011 season which is fairly good for 192cm. With Gourdis, Thursfield or Rance taking the spot as third tall defender we'll be fine for size and height in defence. We'll draft another tall defender you'd think too.
