Tigers beat Port Adelaide in three-point thriller

    * From: Herald Sun

RICHMOND clinched a thrilling three-point victory over Port Adelaide in a practice match in Alice Springs tonight.

Richmond ruckman Tyrone Vickery booted five goals, who starred in the absence of  gun forward Jack Riewoldt, who is out with knee soreness.

Vickery was a first-round draft pick two years ago and tonight's form is what the Tigers have been hoping for.

Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin overpowered the Power through the midfield and Bachar Houli racked up plenty of touches in his first game for Richmond.

Robin Nahas was also busy in attack, kicking two goals. Brad Miller also kicked two.

For Port Adelaide, Justin Westhoff (four goals)  and Daniel Motlop (three) were Port’s best.

Scoreboard:

Richmond 14.8 (92) to Port Adelaide 13.11(89)

Vickery boots Tigers to NAB Challenge victory

FORMER first-round draft pick Tyrone Vickery has guided Richmond to its first victory of the year, with a match-winning five-goal haul against Port Adelaide in Alice Springs on Friday night.

The Tigers trailed by nine points at three-quarter time and appeared headed for defeat when Danyle Pearce extended the Power's lead with the opening goal of the final term, but Richmond refused to give in and steadied with consecutive goals to Angus Graham and Melbourne recruit Brad Miller.

Vickery had already saved the match once, having kicked three goals to regain the ascendancy for his side in the see-sawing third term and his teammates turned to him again in the final term.

The 200cm ruckman/forward, who showed enough to suggest he could form a two-pronged attack with injured Coleman medallist Jack Riewoldt this season, added another two goals to secure a thrilling three-point victory for the Tigers 14.8 (92) to 13.11 (89).

Vickery wasn't the only feel-good story at Traeger Park on Friday night.

In the Port Adelaide camp, embattled forward Daniel Motlop appeared to rediscover his passion for the game in front of the Northern Territory crowd.

Motlop kicked three goals in the first half and gave off another to hand prized draftee John Butcher his first goal at AFL level, but it was lanky goalkicker Justin Westhoff (four goals) who topped the goalkicking for the Power.

The club also unearthed a potential back-up for veteran Dean Brogan, with forward Daniel Stewart spending considerable time in the ruck, while rookie Jarrad Irons pressed his claims for a berth on the senior list with a polished display.

For the Tigers, Miller (two goals) and former Essendon onballer Bachar Houli showed encouraging signs in their first games for the club, while mature-age recruit Tom Dericx looked comfortable in the ruck.

Skipper Chris Newman was a late withdrawal for the Tigers, but young star Trent Cotchin impressed in his first hit-out for the season and livewire Robin Nahas was also handy, kicking two goals.

The Power were criticised for lacking intensity in their first-round NAB Cup matches and responded strongly in the opening minutes on Friday night.

Westhoff, Motlop and a rejuvenated Chad Cornes generated plenty of forward-line pressure, combining to kick three goals to give Port Adelaide a handy 14-point lead at quarter time.

The lead changed several times in the second quarter, with neither side able to maintain their dominance for more than a few minutes and the story was much the same in the third term, as Vickery and Westhoff went goal-for-goal.

It wasn't until the dying stages of the match that Port Adelaide, nursing several underdone players, ran out of legs and Richmond was finally able to pull away.

Tigers finish over top of Port

RICHMOND kicked five out of the last six goals to steal a two-point victory over Port Adelaide at Traeger Park last night.

Led by Tyrone Vickery, who kicked two of his five goals in the final stanza, the Tigers erased a 16-point Power advantage early in the last quarter.

Vickery's fifth goal extended Richmond's lead to nine points, the Tigers biggest of the evening.

A late Danyle Pearce major for Port cut the Tiger advantage to two points, which saw a frantic finish.

Tiger forward turned midfielder Robin Nahas was everywhere as his best-on-ground performance, his intense pressure on the ball was a stand-out.

Richmond came back time and time again throughout the entire four quarters and was rewarded with the ultimate success at the final siren.

The Tigers looked to skip away in the third quarter and led by nine points before Westhoff singlehandedly put the Power back in front with two quick goals from contested marks.

Port's decision to travel on game day didn't seem to be a factor early as Justin Westhoff (three goals) opened proceedings with a quick snap shot goal.

The Power's returning duo of Travis Boak and Robbie Gray slotted right back into top line football with silky skills, but their individual efforts were not good enough as a tired Power outfit was run over in the final wash-up.

Motlop brothers Daniel and Marlon kicked two goals each, Daniel ending the first half in style with a goal on the siren while Marlon followed suit at three quarter time.

Both local products, Troy Taylor (Richmond) and Tom Logan (Port Adelaide), had glimpses of brilliance throughout the match, with Taylor's opening mark on the grandstand wing creating the biggest roar of the night.

Richmond Tigers score NAB Challenge win over Port Adelaide Power at Alice Springs

February 25, 2011 11:58PM

Richmond held on in the last few minutes for a three-point win over Port Adelaide in their AFL pre-season match at Alice Springs.

Tyrone Vickery kicked five goals for the Tigers in the second half as they outlasted the Power 14.8 (92) to 13.11 (89).

There was never more than three or four goals between the two sides through the match, played in mild conditions.

Port kicked the last goal with about three minutes left and the Tigers then defended grimly to hold them out.

Richmond midfield star Trent Cotchin was among the best in his first pre-season game and Robin Nahas also impressed.

Justin Westhoff kicked four goals for the Power and Daniel Motlop contributed three, while defenders Troy Chaplin and Alipate Carlile had solid games at the other end of the ground.

Port led by 16 points eight minutes into the last term but, after some interchange rotations, they were found wanting through the midfield and Richmond took control.

"Our backs held up fairly well under pressure, but we were beaten in the midfield," said Port football manager Peter Rohde.

"We were overrun in the midfield towards the end of the last term.

"But overall, across four quarters, our intensity was a lot better."

"Our intensity was a lot better"?  I hope he was referring to Port's last game - their intensity was certainly not better than ours last night.

I'd say he is comparing to the port's first round in which they copped a bit of flack for their lack of intensity
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways my ways,” says the Lord.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts."

Yahweh? or the great Clawski?

How exciting is it to see Ty Vickery tear a game apart. I was worried where we may find our 2nd avenue to goal but if Vickery can produce a display like this then there may be hope yet. Understand it is only a NAB Challenge game but it shows the clear potential is there.

Great to see Houli had a good game too plus the usual suspects - Cotch and Martin.
