Worst trades ever? (Herald-Sun)
« on: February 23, 2011, 06:07:13 PM »
We've been named twice in the Herald-Sun's worst trade ever blog. One where we gained and one shocker!  :P

Live chat: Worst trades ever

   * Jon Anderson
    * From: Herald Sun
    * February 23, 2011

WAS Brisbane's Brendan Fevola trade the worst ever? What about Todd Ridley for Matthew Lloyd?

As the Brisbane Lions contemplate the result of their disastrous trade for Brendan Fevola, Jon Anderson assesses the worst trade decisions of all time.

Read Ando's top 10 below then see what readers had to say in our live blog.

1: Matthew Lloyd (Ess) for Todd Ridley (Fre) - 1995
2: Scott Lucas (Ess) for Tony Delaney (Fre) - 1994
3: Andrew McLeod (Adel) for Chris Groom (Fre) - 1994

4: Callan Ward (WB) for Jordan McMahon (Rich) - 2007
The Bulldogs youngster looks like becoming a bona fide midfield star after being selected with pick No.19 in 2007. To get 19 from Richmond, the Bulldogs gave up Jordan McMahon who faded into obscurity after only two seasons at Tigerland and was delisted last year.

5: Simon Black (Bris) for Simon Hawking and Brent Green (Syd) - 1997
6: Tom Harley (Geel) for Adam Morgan (PA) - 1998
7: Paul Chapman (Geel) for Michael Mansfield (Carl) - 1999
8: Trent Croad (Haw) to Fremantle - and back - 2001
9: Drew Petrie (NM) for Evan Hewitt (Adel) - 2000

10: Michael Gale, Paul Broderick and Matthew Dundas (Rich) for Jeff Hogg and Trent Cummings Fitz) - 1993
One of the biggest deals in AFL history also yielded Steven Jurica at pick No.26 for the Tigers. Hogg's best footy was already behind him and Cummings at pick No.6 was questionable at best for the Lions, playing just 27 games in two seasons. Broderick, in particular, was a steal for the Tigers, going on to win the 1996 best-and-fairest as part of his 169 games at Punt Rd.

Adam Thomsom and Tom Hislop are a little unlucky to not make that list.

The McMahon trade was a shocker, but rating Ward ahead of Chapman and Black?  ::)

Adam Thomson was close to that list.  I still can't understand why we gave pick 42 for him and didnt go for Prismall that the bombers got with pick 39....If we did a deal with geelong for prismall and he nominated us, surely geelong would have taken pick 42....

I think you will find that Tom Hislop was not traded for but drafted instead - so by definition couldn't be a worst trade.

Sorry but trading of a 3rd rounder is hardly considered a Top 10 in AFL history trading failure
As has been said Hislop was not a trade

From memory we had no chance of getting Prismall. The excuse Craig Cameron gave for traiding for Thomson was that he was one of the best clearance players in the AFL over the limited time on ground he had at Port. There was a reason why he was getting limited gametime and played mostly SANFL at Port - he couldn't kick  :P.
