I reckon Newy is our best skipper since at least Tony Free! Any thoughts?

he may be better than Free as he's actually playing regular games and not sidelined with injury as Tony was.
I also was a big fan of Wayne Campbell.

many hated wayne campbell but he was a damn good captain, even better than knighter as a captain
but our last true captain was the flea, and newman will be our best captain since him, followed by campbo
freezer was tough but wasnt a true leader imo

i think it took him a couple of yrs to get over his broken leg, many forget how bad he did break it, but thats talking about his form. before he broke his leg he start to really find good form and now its coming back

but as a leader, u either have it and u dont, and i think he always had it in him

On GR12's question - Freezer and Newy are very different players so it's hard to compare them even from a captaincy point of view. Both though seem to have a uniting influence on the team and went about installing a fighting competitive spirit in the team (credit must also go to Northey and Hardwick). Newy comes across more as a General marshalling his troops from the backline given how young the side is now and how the game now is organised into lines whereas Freezer being a midfielder in the early 90s was more a nuggety in and under follow my lead captain for mine.

Does no-one rate Matthew Knights?

I may be bias as I grew up loving Knighta. I thought he was a gem.

As player definitely. Arguably our most talented Tiger of the past 20 years or so (an old poster called JohnF who was a Cambo lover would disagree lol). When Knighter was captain though we failed to make the finals and as a team we fell apart in virtually all crunch games when our leadership would show no leadership.

In 1995 he was stand in skipper arguably our most successful season since the 80s?

I'll never forget his game against Essendon in the Final in 1995.

What Knighter did in that semi-final was the stuff of legends but 1995 has lost its lustre given what followed with the flogging from Geelong the week after and then the Club getting it so wrong and misjudging where we were as a side. 2001 was similar. I loved Knighter as a player and followed his progress up the ranks from the U19s where you knew then he was something special but our poor on-field history whether fairly or not reflects on his reign as captain.
