Tigers on a go slow

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick says the Tigers will need to lock down a rejuvenated Adelaide when the teams clash at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The Crows have won three of their four matches since Mark Bickley took over as caretaker coach.

Their only loss in that period was a narrow defeat to second-placed Geelong.

"We're really looking forward to the challenge," Hardwick said at the ME Bank Centre on Thursday.

"They are one of the form teams in the competition at the moment.

"They play really well at home and 'Bicks' has got them playing some really fast, exciting football.

"There's no doubt they're moving the ball a hell of a lot quicker from defence. I think they're playing on from defence 61 per cent [of the time].

"Collingwood are at 50 [per cent] and they generally do it more than anyone else.

"It's something we'll take into account. We'll try and slow them down as much as possible, but it's easier said than done."

Richmond is in good form itself, having beaten the Sydney Swans and Melbourne in the past two weeks.

But the Tigers have been terrible on the road this season, winning just one of their five interstate matches (they beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba but lost to Port Adelaide in Darwin, Gold Coast in Cairns, the Sydney Swans at the SCG and West Coast in Perth).

Hardwick hopes a few changes to their routine will give them a better chance of toppling the Crows.

Whereas the Tigers flew to Darwin and Cairns earlier than usual so they could train at the venue, they won't be doing that this week.

"We're going to train here and then go there a little bit later," Hardwick said.

"We've tried a number of things this year and we just need to find out what works.

"Generally, younger groups do take time to learn how to travel. We'll find the best routine for us and try and get the result."

Richmond concede on Newman's season

Time and caution will scuttle Richmond skipper Chris Newman's bid to play again this AFL season.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick concedes Newman's race to overcome a late-season knee injury is effectively over.

The skipper will miss Richmond's second-last match of the season against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

And Hardwick says there is little to be gained by racing Newman back for the season-ending match against North Melbourne the following week for his out-of-finals-contention side.

"He's been touch and go to see whether he'd play this season, which is really disappointing because he's had an outstanding year once again," Hardwick said on Thursday.

"He's too important a player. He'll put his hand up again next week but ... we're not prepared to put out a player for one week when there's not much to be gained from it."

The Crows-Tigers clash may be a "best of the rest" clash for those not in finals contention, with both teams hitting late-season form.

Richmond have won consecutive matches - the latest a seven-point triumph over Melbourne.

And Adelaide have found new vigour under caretaker coach Mark Bickley, winning three of four matches under his tutelage.

Hardwick believes the Crows have rebranded themselves, playing faster, slicker football under Bickley and currently present a huge danger to anyone they play.

"Bicks has got them playing really fast, exciting football - that's the thing we've noticed," Hardwick said.

"The pace with which they move the ball is outstanding. They're probably one of the form teams of the competition at the moment."

Also concerning for the Tigers is that they have won just one of five matches outside Victoria this season - nothing seemingly able to aid their travel sickness.

The Tigers will now experiment with going later to Adelaide and conducting their final training session in Melbourne before departure.

'We haven't travelled well this year so we're looking forward to putting some things in place that will get us over the line," Hardwick said.
