Malthouse headed into commentary

AFL coaching legend Mick Malthouse could be headed full on into football media next year.

The three-time AFL premiership coach is less than a fortnight away from being out of a job but speculation is rapidly rising he is headed for footy commentary when he steps down as Collingwood coach next month.

Malthouse and his management are believed to be in discussions with television broadcasting rights holders Channel Seven to be another member of their already high profile commentary team.

It is unclear whether Malthouse will join Seven’s Friday night, Saturday or Sunday broadcast teams.

He is highly regarded by Seven general-manager Lewis Martin who is said to be an avid Magpies fan.

Expectations are rising that Malthouse, 58, will head into the media after his controversial departure from Collingwood to hand over the coaching reins to Nathan Buckley.

He has not committed to Magpies president Eddie McGuire’s planned coaching director’s role in his elaborate succession plan in Malthouse's controversial departure and Buckley's elevation into the coaching seat.

McGuire continues to claim that the Pies will have a director of coaching to work with Buckley, but there is little likelihood that it will be Malthouse.
