Benny Gale and Campbell - top 10 of picks 21-30 (Herald-Sun)

Following on from Newy being a top 10 late pick, the Herald-Sun today has Benny Gale and Wayne Campbell in the top 10 players ever selected with picks 21-30. Kane Johnson is in there as well but Adelaide drafted him.

--------------------------------------------

10. Nick Stevens, pick 25, 1997 (Port Adelaide)
9. Drew Petrie, pick 23, 2000 (North Melbourne)
8. Daniel Chick, pick 25, 1995 (Hawthorn)

7. Kane Johnson, pick 27, 1995 (Adelaide)

Had two premiership medals by the time he turned 21 then picked a bad time (ie any time in the last 30 years) to request a trade to Richmond. Captained the Tigers from 2005-2008 and went from a dashing midfielder to a selfless tagger, claiming the 2006 Jack Dyer Medal.

6. Paul Licuria, pick 24, 1995 (Sydney)

5. Brendon Gale, pick 27, 1987 (Richmond)

Richmond would prefer not to be reminded of its first pick in the second national draft (the Tigers used the No.1 selection on lumbering giant Richard Lounder - sorry guys). But they can take pride in their second choice. Recruited from the Burnie Hawks, Gale played 244 games (240 more than Lounder) before retiring in 2001. Originally a centre half-forward, he moved into the ruck to help carry a team through a horror era which he is now trying to end as club CEO.

4. Wayne Campbell, pick 29, 1989 (Richmond)
For some reason Tiger fans never really warmed to the Golden Square midfielder, but you can't argue with four club best-and-fairest awards. He was a ball magnet, Richmond captain from 2001-04, a two-time All-Australian and favourite for the 1995 Brownlow. His 297 games places him fourth on the club's all-times games list.

3. Darrin Pritchard, pick 26, 1986 (Hawthorn)
2. Steve Johnson, pick 24, 2001 (Geelong)
1. Michael Long, pick 23, 1988 (Essendon)

lets face it there is not going to be a lot of good players taken after pick 50.  the simple reason being the actual amount of picks used would only average out at about 70 picks per nd in recent times. so we are talking about 20 late nd picks each yr give or take.

late picks are like rookie picks you use plenty to find the odd gem.
