Hope he doesn't just trot out the usual party jargon and provides some genuine insight.

Especially as it was reported Connors spoke to Newy directly. Poor Newy now has to deal with the typical questions about both Fev and Dan. He should have gone for a longer honeymoon.

Tigers’ defensive mindset
By Tony Greenberg

Wed 01 Feb, 2012

Richmond captain Chris Newman has pinpointed the key area the Tigers need to improve in if they are to take the crucial next step in season 2012.

“There’s no doubt we can play offensively . . . we can score.  The biggest improvement we need to make is defensively and that’s not just in the back 50 - it’s all across the ground,” Newman said on SEN’s ‘Morning Glory’ program today (February 1).

“That’s certainly been a focus this pre-season.  We’ve been doing a lot of work on our defensive reaction stuff and, hopefully, we see the benefits of that . . .

“We’ve got a long way to go.  We haven’t played finals for a long time, so we definitely need to improve, and that improvement’s going to come from the defensive training that we’ve been doing.

“I think there’s no doubt if we do that, we’re going to be right up there and competitive with all those teams.”

Newman also believes increased midfield depth will play an important part in Richmond’s progression this year.

“I think that depth is something we’ve been building and will become a strength of ours,” Newman said.

“Reece (Conca) is one of those guys who can go in there.  He provides a bit of toughness and a bit of silk around the football.

“There’s also no doubt that Brett Deledio will go in there at some stage and add a bit of class.

“I’ve been putting my hand up, too.  Hopefully, I’ll get a chance . . . I’ve had my hand up for about 10 years, so I’m hoping Damien (Hardwick) can give me a chop-out,” he joked.

I've done a brief summary of what Newy said as well....

* Main thing we've got most of the guys on the track now. In good shape to tackle this phase of the preseason.

* Depth is building and will become a strength. No doubt the guys can play in the midfield.

* Conca one of the guys who can go in there and add some toughness. Lids as well who will add some class. Newy himself too.

* Trying to get a pen in Lids' hands to sign lol. Key player and someone who can lead the club towards success which is just around the corner.

* Free agency will chnage the landscape and give the players more power. Hopefully doesn't muddy the water but he believes it will be a good thing. Hopefully Lids signs which is the main thing for us. Talk about where players are going does drag on.

* Think we're really close. We need to play finals football. Newy about to break Trevor Barker's record to he wants to play finals as much as the supporters.

* We can play offensively but the biggest area we need to improve in is defensively. Not just back 50 but across the ground and has been the focus of preseason. Working of reaction stuff. If we can implement then

* Talked about his wedding up in Daylesford. Popped the question to Lauren at Anthony Mithen's farm. Pretended he was looking for a foal and then pulled out the ring. She was filfthy we didn't get a foal lol.

* Jack cost them the golf tournament hitting it all over the place lol.

* Griffiths is okay. Had a little tightening of the groin the other day but should be back on the track next week. Internally will be a little frustrated not being able to get that continuity of training and playing but he's up and about around the club and will be alright.

* Heslin shows natural ability which is important for the guys coming across from Ireland. Will be a defender.

* Hardwick has been fantastic and improves each year. Knows the line between being a mate and the coach. Is and will be fantastic for the club. If you cross that line he will chop your toe off for sure. Some players take advantage of his lighter side and bag Dimma for his 80s jeans. Jack is only game enough to call him stiffy or whatever

* We feel we have the cattle to match it and can't wait to play Carlton in round 1.

* Smokies - Morris is the guy who can fit straight into our defensive as BP/HBF and has the body ready to go.
