THE AFL has approved the introduction of a video score review system for season 2012.
The decision was made at Friday morning's AFL commission meeting.
As of Saturday night's season opening clash between the Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney, umpires will be able to refer goal umpiring decisions to a score reviewer, who will have access to broadcast vision.
If the vision is conclusive the score reviewer will confirm the correct result with the on-field officials.
If the vision cannot assist, the decision will be referred back to the umpires on-field.
Players will not be allowed to call for a score review.
AFL general manager of football operations Adrian Anderson said the expectation was that score reviews would not delay play for more than a minute.
"The trials through the NAB Cup have shown that broadcast vision can assist us reaching the correct decision in some cases, and we have elected to introduce the change if we can eliminate errors in some instances," Anderson said.
"Video technology will not remove all errors from the game, as some replays cannot assist, but the aim is to improve decision-making where possible."
