RICHMOND has survived a dismal day in front of goal and narrowly escaped a damaging defeat in a nervy 12-point victory over Greater Western Sydney at a sodden Skoda Stadium on Saturday.

Needing a win to stay within the reach of the top eight, the Tigers led by just six points 21 minutes into the final term following a goal to substitute and first-gamer Sam Schulz and a Callan Ward behind.

But two goals in two minutes to Daniel Connors late in the fourth quarter allowed Richmond to escape with an 11.20 (86) to 12.2 (74) victory over a gallant Giants outfit and just improve to 6-6 for the season.

GWS was well in the hunt for just its second victory of the year deep in the final quarter and, while the home side just fell short, it will earn plenty of plaudits for its fighting display.

Brett Deledio stood out in the dreadful conditions, finishing with 31 possessions and a goal, while Jack Riewoldt and Connors kicked three goals for the visitors.

Jeremy Cameron continued his outstanding season for the Giants, kicking three goals, while Phil Davis and Chad Cornes provided plenty of resistance in the backline and Toby Greene added two goals.

No.1 NAB AFL Draft Pick Jonathon Patton also showed some good signs in his first game, kicking a goal and providing a target up forward and across the ground.

The Tigers dominated possession in the early exchanges, but were unable to convert it into points, twelve inside 50s to zero over the opening 10 minutes resulting in one solitary behind for the visitors in a sign of what was to come.

The pressure eventually told on the Giants, with goals to Daniel Jackson, Riewoldt and Shane Edwards giving Richmond some reward for effort.

GWS was able to steady, however, answering with majors to veteran James McDonald and Patton to remain in touch.

Patton got off to a slow start in the atrocious conditions, but the 19-year-old showed snippets of his promise late in the opening term.

First he demonstrated his terrific hands by taking a strong contested mark ahead of Matt Dea on the wing late in the term, before racing up the ground and snaring another grab at the top of the goalsquare 45 seconds later.

He kicked truly on a slight angle for his first AFL goal as the Giants headed to the first break trailing by 14 points.

That deficit was then slashed to just two points within two minutes of the second quarter, with goals to Cameron and Greene stunning the Tigers.

Richmond responded with four straight behinds before a Trent Cotchin goal helped establish only a two-goal edge at half-time.

The Tigers continued their wasteful ways in the third term, kicking 3.7 to the Giants' three straight goals to stretch their lead to 19 points at the final change.

Richmond then dodged a massive bullet in a frenetic final term to remain in the hunt for September action.

It was his debut game, and he clunked 3 or 4 contested marks in tough conditions, 3 or 4 more than our fwds combined.

Tbh with you, listening to the foxtel commentary they were barracking for the giants, we were sitting in the mrc room today just astonished at some of the poo these commentars were coming up with not to mention jumping in the car listening to "hairy malaka" and "crappy the bush kangaroota" the umpires were there to upset us and help this fledgling club find its 2nd win. They all hate us and think nothing of us.

FOR a player regarded as the most exciting new footballer in the AFL, it was a tame debut.

But at a rain-swept Skoda Stadium - in front of a small crowd of 7358 - Jonathon Patton showed glimpses to whet the appetite of those hoping the 19-year-old No.1 draft pick will match the hype and develop into one of the game's leading players.

Making his first senior appearance after undergoing knee surgery in Sweden in January, the tall forward did his best in conditions more favourable to smaller men, grabbing seven possessions, four marks, two tackles and a goal.

His efforts helped the Giants get within 12 points of the Tigers, who were forced to rely on their bigger, more seasoned bodies to overcome the newcomers' challenge late in the match. In fact, as late as six minutes into the third term, the scores were level after goals to Andrew Phillips and Dylan Shiel cancelled out the half-time deficit of 12 points.

When Toby Greene and Jeremy Cameron scored consecutive goals in the final term for the Giants, Richmond - despite having more than twice as many scoring shots - led by just nine points. At the 21-minute mark of the final term, first-gamer Sam Schulz booted his first goal and the Giants were only seven points down.

But a welcome couple of goals to Daniel Connors settled the debate and Richmond got home through the experience and class of Shane Tuck, Brett Deledio and Trent Cochin.

Patton started at centre half-forward and had Ben Griffiths as his opponent. But he saw little of the ball as the Tigers camped inside their forward-50-metre arc.

The Tigers' first goals came in quick succession through Daniel Jackson and Jack Riewoldt after 13 minutes.

A friendly free kick offered James McDonald the Giants' first, but Shane Edwards kicked a goal for Richmond in reply.

Patton came from the field without a touch to his name, but returned eight minutes later and had his first involvement with a strong mark over Matt Dea. That effort led to an attack and Patton, an under-18 All-Australian, completed it with another mark and good set shot at goal to reduce the margin to seven points.

Edwards kicked his second goal just before quarter-time to give the Tigers a 14-point break.

The hard-fought second quarter began with a Cameron goal after he was awarded a soft free kick from a niggly Jake Batchelor. A good baulk and snap by Greene closed the margin to two points.

Richmond again pulled away, as Deledio topped off a dominant first half with a goal, added to by Cotchin. But the Giants wouldn't lie down and Rhys Palmer kept them in touch.

Patton showed a second encouraging glimpse with another good mark on the wing. By half-time, the big No.12 had six disposals, three marks, a tackle and a goal.

The Giants kicked the first two of the second half to level the scores six minutes into the third term. But two goals to Riewoldt and one to Connors - negated by one to Cameron after the siren - left the gap at 19 points at the final break.

GWS threatened in the final term and sensed a shock win when Schulz slotted home a goal from 50, but Connors took control for Richmond with a couple of late goals.

Cheers EeA, this has carried over from another discussion.. chuck was having a crack at pinheads performance bc I dared to say their key fwds had more impact and structured up better than ours, so in typical small dick syndrome he has to question the impact of a debutant and a 10 game player and tries to use this article to justify his pov.
