Hardwick fined for ump abuse
By Matt Thompson
Wed 23 May, 2012

RICHMOND coach Damian Harwick has been handed a suspended $5000 fine for swearing at an emergency umpire.

The incident happened in the interchange bench area just before three-quarter time of the Tigers' loss to Essendon last Saturday night.

The match day umpires detailed the outburst in their post-game report, leading AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson to seek an explanation from Richmond.

The AFL would not divulge what was said, and Hardwick has personally apologised to the umpire.

The fine will be suspended for the next three years, and activated if Hardwick commits another offence.

"Regulations such as these exist because of the need for the AFL competition to set a positive example on conduct towards umpires," Anderson said in a statement.

"Abuse towards umpires continues to impact negatively on the recruitment and retention of umpires throughout Australia.

"Damien Hardwick personally acknowledged the comments made and that he regretted doing so, and this was taken into account, while acknowledging umpires must not be subject to such approaches through the course of a game."

The AFL needs to bring the umpires, oops, sorry ....maggots, into the mainstream AFL sytem instead of isolating them and treating them like tax collectors.

Let the clubs, the press and media (sorry but these press and media morons need to be part of it too) treat the maggots just the same as they treat the players, coaches and officials.

Allow them to be praised publically, and critiscised publically.

When the Geish comes out and supports a particular maggot or decision, you know that the poor basketcase is going up country next weekend, just like Eddie declaring his support for Mick M last year.

Get them into the rooms before and after a game. Get them onto the footy TV shows. Make the good ones Legends of the Game. But let the also rans, go home to mum.

Put them under the same pressure and media scrutiny that the players and coaches are under..............and they will respond to this pressure and RAISE THEIR BLOODY GAME and get even more enjoyment out of our mighty game.

The maggots would then become respected citizens within our great game and would no longer be called bloody maggots..... the real respect for their craft will filter down through the minor leagues and we will have quality umpires coming into the system instead of the NFI maggots who have grown up to block out the critiscism "for the good of the game" and hate the attention that the players get.....

Wouldn't it be nice to meet any AFL umpire and get the chance to shake his hand and congratulate him on a wonderful game, or career?

Or to ask him or her his/her opinion on how they made the decision........we all might become more enlightened.

Remember the World of Sport days and What's Your Decision?

Andy D and AA would never allow anything like this. Umps are too precious.

At least on World of Sport the umps gave their reasons at coming to a decision rather than getting

Giesche to read from a prepared statement and smokescreen his way through excuse A B and C.

Maybe World Of Sport had it right and the feedback for the Umps was not as critical as it is now.

Just as a coach or a player or administration lives and dies by a sword so should the Umps.

I would have more respect for them if they came back with a retort, the emerg umpire should have asked Hardwick if it was also their fault that Richmond kicked 8 behinds for the quarter.

After Wednesday's press conference, Hardwick umpired a match in the Bachar Houli Cup, a round-robin football competition between Melbourne's eight Islamic schools, at the J.J. Holland Reserve in Kensington.

The coach umpired the match as part of his penance for abusing an emergency umpire during the match against Essendon at the MCG in round eight.
