Gaspar grins as Carlton fumble
08 May 2005
Sunday Herald Sun
Scot Palmer

SUCCESS-starved Richmond rejoiced with every one of its 151 points yesterday, but the non-scoring end of the ground provided just as much hope for the Tigers' season.

Darren Gaspar, 28, rubbished unmercifully last year when his fitness after a knee reconstruction blunted his wonderful skills, is back to his best . . . just ask anybody at Carlton.

And with the Gaspar resurrection has come the type of defence Richmond will need if it is to continue its surge up the ladder and may be, just may be, be around in September.

Season 2004 for Gaspar was a horror, spending three games with Coburg in the VFL and being used upfield away from his favourite goal square in an attempt to restore his confidence.

Look at him yesterday – the speed was back the body movements sound, his spoiling tactics resulted in Carlton's big Lance Whitnall being moved into defence in the second half.

Along with Gaspar comes Andrew Kellaway, Chris Newman, Mark Graham, Ray Hall and, for the most part yesterday, Mark Chaffey until Blues goal sneak Matty Lappin got clear to finish with five goals.
