Cashed-up Freo eyes big fishBy Matt Thompson
Thu 01 Nov, 2012FREMANTLE has freed up enormous space in its salary cap to make a big play in the 2013 free agency period, with Hawthorn superstar Lance Franklin a potential target.
As Freo's premiership window opens under coach Ross Lyon, it's estimated the club could be in a position to offer the West Australian-born forward, or another big name free agent, a front-ended deal worth as much as $1.5 million in season one.
The Hawks would not be in a position to match such a massive offer.
Fremantle's failure in recent years to secure Mitch Clark (an estimated $600k per year offer) and Travis Cloke (an estimated $1 million per year offer) means the flexibility within the salary cap continues to grow.
If Freo fails to secure Franklin, St Kilda's Nick Riewoldt, Collingwood's Dale Thomas and North Melbourne's Drew Petrie are also potential targets. Or the club could look to lure home West Australian-born Kangaroos midfielder Daniel Wells.
