Brown fires warning to Tigers' rivals

Richmond forward Nathan Brown has warned that the Tigers still have plenty of room for improvement after yesterday's 35-point victory against Collingwood.

Brown kicked five goals in the final quarter as the Tigers blew past the Pies to claim their sixth win from eight games and move to third on the AFL ladder.

Despite a record of crashing out of finals contention in recent years, Brown said the Tigers were now aiming for a top four finish.

"To be third at this time of year, you've got to start raising your expectations now," he said.

"You don't want to get ahead of yourself, but you're in a position to stay in the top four and have a home final. It's a long way down the track, but that's something we've got to be aiming for.

"We can't have a start this good - six and two - and let it go by the wayside and only win 10 games for the season," he added.

"We're playing good football, we're being coached well, and the supporters are getting behind us, but with a few inclusions to come back in we can only get better."

No problems with raising our expectations but the finals are still a long long way off. The next month will tell us if we're truly good enough.

Look I understand where he is coming from but at this stage we are half-way there (to the finals). 12 wins will see us in...I aint beating no finals drum, let alone Top 4 bc if in the next 3 weeks we dont get a win, we are 6-5 and well back in the pack.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace has denied reports that the Tigers have re-assessed their goals and are now aiming for a top-four finish after their sixth win of the season.

Wallace moved quickly to put a lid on heightened expectations at Punt Road after the Tigers surged into third spot on the ladder with a win against Collingwood.

"We won't change our objectives," Wallace said on Tuesday.

"Our objective was top eight at the start of the season as I've said on a number of occasions, and we'll just stick to those objectives and just march on regardless."

Media reports circulating earlier in the week had suggested the Tigers were aiming higher after their strong start to the year.

And while Wallace admitted his team was ahead in most key performance indicators, a review was not due until mid-year.

"We haven't spoken about changing any direction or our goals," he said.

"We'll get to the halfway mark of the year and assess our goals and we'll have a look at just exactly how we're going… when we get the week's break but, until then, we're just marching on."

im pretty sure the only reason y tw chose sugar as captain because he didnt want everyone- the club, media , fans, and players to think he favours his love child , nathan brown. he is our match winner, he has the silkiest skills, he has teh arrogance and confidence, and he is gr8 in the media. but terry would have thought 4 team harmony sugar was the option.  sugar is taking public speaking courses atm, i think from next yr and beyond we will see him in the media more, but until then, brown, richo, and joel have done most of the pr work

A few weeks ago at a pre-match coterie function Johnno was a guest speaker and he spoke very very well.  He was asked why he didn't do much media in Adelaide and he said he didn't need to because over there there is only the 2 teams while here in Melbourne because there are 9 clubs (10 if you include Geelong) you have to be able to promote and sell your club and as a result he is happy to do that now.

Again last week at the Player link dinner he spoke well with the other memebers of the leadership group.

He is doing a lot more media now as well the other things Captains do like sponsor functions.

Next couple of weeks against tougher opponents will test how much our leadership group has improved.

"We won't change our objectives," Wallace said on Tuesday.

"Our objective was top eight at the start of the season as I've said on a number of occasions, and we'll just stick to those objectives and just march on regardless."

Good to see Terry just keeping a lid on things and keeping everyone's focus on the Brisbane game.
