Tim Mathieson pressured Richmond to snub Tony Abbott

AN email obtained exclusively by The Weekend Australian reveals Julia Gillard's partner, Tim Mathieson, sought to involve her office in pressuring a major sporting club to freeze out Tony Abbott.

After attending an AFL clash at the MCG as a guest of the Richmond Football Club, Mr Mathieson emailed its chief executive, Brendon Gale, copying in the Prime Minister's office, to complain about the Opposition Leader's access to the team's inner sanctum and his prominent seating at a pre-game function.

Its behind pay wall so I couldn't post all the article. I'm glad the club and Brendan stood up to Tim and explained the club takes a bipartisan view on politics and not played into his political games.

Slow news day  . No surprise though from the Liberal Party cheerleading gazette otherwise known as the Australian.

Tim was being petulant but for mine I don't like any pollie from either side who have never given a stuff about Aussie Rules all their life trying to suck up to AFL clubs. It's cringeworthy. For a life long Tiger supporter to get the same access they have to pay $1000s per year in premium/coterie memberships yet a pollie who has never followed the game let alone the Club can just walk in for nothing . It backfired on Keating and Collingwood back in the early 90s. Abbott's heart is Rugby League. It was only a few days ago Abbott told his beloved Manly that as PM he'd get them funding to keep them playing home games at Brookvale (one of the NRL's most dilapidated grounds) rather than follow the NRL and NSW government's move towards ground rationalisation (more NRL games at ANZ, Allianz).
