A GOAL after the final siren to spearhead Jack Riewoldt has given Richmond a stunning one-point NAB Cup victory over Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium in Launceston on Saturday.
 
The Tigers' less than inspiring recent record in close matches looked like rearing its head again when Jarryd Roughead booted his third goal of the final term to put the Hawks in front with only minutes remaining.
 
But Riewoldt was ice cool in slotting a set shot from 35 metres out on a 45-degree angle to seal the 0.13.7 (85) to 0.13.6 (84) win.
 
The Coleman medallist finished with three goals to be his team's leading scorer along with former skipper Chris Newman, who kicked two of his three goals in the back-and-forth final term.
 
Roughead kicked five for the Hawks, but their loss was further soured by the loss of Matt Suckling to a right knee injury.
 
Richmond took a much stronger team on paper into the clash, and its seasoned stars stood out.
 
Along with Riewoldt and Newman, midfielders Trent Cotchin and Brett Deledio were among the Tigers' best, both finding plenty of the football.
 
Hawthorn remains without a win in the pre-season competition, but there were some positives.
 
Without several senior stars including Lance Franklin, Brad Sewell, Cyril Rioli and Luke Hodge, a number of borderline players strongly pressed their round one claims.
 
Chief among them was wingman Bradley Hill, who ran hard from start to finish, while Jonathan Simpkin, Jed Anderson, Sam Grimley and Matt Spangher were all prominent in stages.
 
Star midfielder Sam Mitchell was the best of the senior Hawks, with Shaun Burgoyne and Grant Birchall also playing well in their first hit-outs of the year.

Richmond star Jack Riewoldt steers Tigers to victory over Hawthorn

WITH 30 seconds of brilliance, Jack Riewoldt went from mediocre to miracle man at Aurora Stadium yesterday when he kicked the winning goal after the final siren.

With one kick, the Tasmanian Tiger delivered Richmond a heart-stopping one-point victory in a NAB Cup thriller over Hawthorn.

Until then, Riewoldt had had a gruelling day at the office under the watch of Hawk defender Josh Gibson, who had contained the reigning Coleman medallist to two goals.

Hawthorn bigman Jarryd Roughead had converted a debatable fee kick in front of goal to put the Hawks up by five points with less then a minute to play.

From the bounce, Richmond worked the ball forward and a scrappy kick from pocket-rocket Robin Nahas landed in the hands of Riewoldt 35m out on a 45 degree angle.

"It was great that we got another close win, which was a positive, a kick after the siren,'' said Tiger coach Damien Hardwick. "We tried a few things today that didn't quite come off, so we've still got a bit of work to do."

Despite his match-winning moment, Riewoldt was told post-match to keep his eyes in the prize - kicking goals.

"He had an up and down game,'' Hardwick said.

"He probably tried to pass off a few too many. We've already spoken to him about how he had a number of opportunities to kick goals and didn't.

"It was a good way for him to finish off the game, but he has just got to realise that when he's running in with an open goal, he's paid to kick goals, kick the goal.''

The inclusion of former Port Adelaide defender Troy Chaplin into Richmond's backline appears to be the injection of big meat the Tigers have been missing.

Chaplin was strong, assertive and did not have a goal kicked against him while he was minding Roughead, Sam Grimley and Matt Sprangher.

Chappy was subbed off seven minutes into the third term and the three Hawks went on to kick eight goals between them - five to Roughead.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick thought his side was poor and played a scrappy game against Hawthorn.

There's no doubt it was good having a bigger body down there, Hardwick said.

This is the worst he will be, the rustiest he will be, but he certainly showed the reason why we brought him across.

The loss of hard-running midfielder Matt Suckling for the season with a knee injury and a likely full reconstruction made it a bad day for the Hawks who went through the preseason series without winning a game.

A goal after the final siren from Richmond star Jack Riewoldt has given the Tigers a heart-stopping one-point pre-season cup win over Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium in Launceston.

Riewoldt nailed the difficult six-pointer from wide to the left to deliver Richmond a 0.13.7 (85) to 0.13.6 (84) victory after a see-sawing final quarter in which the lead changed six times.

The victory gave Richmond a 3-1 record for the pre-season and left grand finalists the Hawks winless after four.

Hawthorn forward Jarryd Roughead booted three of his five goals in the final term, but it wasn't enough after his side had clawed back from a 19-point half-time deficit.

Riewoldt and Chris Newman finished with three each for the Tigers with Roughead supported by Shaun Burgoyne and Matt Spangher with doubles in front of 8601 in Launceston.

Hawthorn went into the game against the near full-strength Tigers without a number of big guns, including Lance Franklin, Cyril Rioli and captain Luke Hodge but Burgoyne and Grant Birchall made their first appearances of the year.

Richmond was all over them early and kicked four of the first five goals to race out to a 19-point lead.

But three goals in quick succession to Shane Savage, Jed Anderson and Burgoyne saw the Hawks finish the first term the stronger and at level pegging.

The Tigers came our growling in the second, booting four of the five goals to go to the long break up 0.8.4 to 0.5.3.

Riewoldt provided the comedy when he spectacularly somersaulted over the boundary fence and into one of the stands at Aurora, emerging unscathed moments later.

Hawthorn clawed their way back, kicking the first three goals of the third - two to Spangher - to narrow the margin to just three.

They hit the lead when Derick Wanganeen goaled but Richmond led by two points when Bachar Houli kicked a major on the stroke of three-quarter-time.
