Nathan Lovett-Murray is recovering in hospital after allegedly being stabbed in the arm in a dispute on Tuesday evening
Police confirmed that a 30-year-old Pascoe Vale man was attacked in Reservoir during a domestic incident.
Emergency services went to a house in Wright Street just after 10pm after a fight between three men.
The 30-year-old was allegedly stabbed in the upper arm and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, a police spokeswoman said.
Police searched another house in Reservoir on Wednesday morning and arrested two people.
A 22-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, both from Reservoir, are assisting police with inquiries.
The stabbed man was in a stable condition on Wednesday morning, a Royal Melbourne hospital spokeswoman said.
Lovett-Murray has played one game this season and has spoken of his plans for his post-football career.
He was expected to line up in the Dreamtime game against Richmond on Saturday night, the centrepiece of the AFL indigenous round, which celebrates the contribution of Aboriginal footballers to the code.
He has created Payback Records, a recording label for indigenous artists. He told Fairfax Media last year that he also wanted to enter sports management.
‘‘I’m looking at managing and mentoring indigenous athletes, but I also want to be more involved with the footy club, with the indigenous programs they run here and some welfare stuff they do here at the club,’’ he said.
Essendon CEO Ian Robson told a press conference at Essendon’s Windy Hill base that it is believed the altercation took place at Lovett-Murray’s girlfriend’s house and involved an ex-partner of hers who was the subject of an intervention order.
Robson said Lovett-Murray had been defending himself and that he is expected to make a "quick and full recovery" from his injuries.
Lovett-Murray is expected to be released shortly, and the club will issue a statement once more details of his treatment become clear. "This sends a real shiver down everyone’s spine," Robson said of the incident.
Robson said the club welfare officer was with Lovett-Murray in hospital, working with his family to ensure the best possible treatment.
Lovett-Murray was due to play a central part in the an event celebrating Essendon’s reconciliation action plan, scheduled for Wednesday. Robson said he was a "much loved and much respected ... tribal elder of the dressing room" and gave "all the thoughts and well wishes of the Essendon family" as he recovers.
Lovett-Murray has played 143 games for the Bombers since his debut in 2004. His contract was extended at the end of last year.
Speaking of the contract renewal, manager Peter Jess, said Lovett-Murray offered more than just football smarts.
''The footy club have given him another 12 months and supported his indigenous mentoring program … mentoring young indigenous footballers in the community, regarding lifestyle and employment and a range of life outcomes, and ensures they can get the best for themselves.''
