5 Steps to beat Richmond

Step One  - Play Man on Man
Richmond players are used to playing with time and space to use their foot-skills to thread their way through opposition zones. When you man up on them and make them accountable they lose faith/confidence in this tactic particularly from the half back. Shut down their time and space and they lose their run and look to hurriedly kick it on and long which will allow you to turn it over quickly.

Step Two  - Shut down Deledio
Tag Lids and you severely reduce the Tigers run and carry. Deledio is the Tigers number one ranked players for meters gained. Unlike Cotchin he can not shake a tag either so it is a must for all teams.

Step Three  - Set up players behind the Stoppage
The Tigers set up around stoppages with extra numbers behind the contest to stop quick run on and to find space. If you have a ruckman who can jump over Maric, have them palm the ball backwards where the Tigers players won't be and move the ball backwards and sideways into space.

Step Four  - Drop a players back
Most teams employ this strategy but it is particularly effective against Richmond. If you can pressure them up field using the above tactics they tend to hurry the ball long and high into their forward line which can then be predictably read by the extra defender. Block the run and jump of players like Jack and McGuane by playing body on body rather than in front, and you will give your extra defender plenty of time to fill the hole, take the mark and move it on quickly.

Step Five  - Drop off the Tigers poor ball users
Allow players like Jackson, Rance, Chaplin, Lonegan and Maric to gain the ball but make sure they are pressured and are forced to kick. They are poor decision makers and if you cover all options they will either kick it long to a contest or turn it over directly.

Follow these steps and you should have no problem beating the Richmond team in 2013.  ::)  :banghead

Spot on but this is our biggest problem,  no plan B. Surely all our highly paid coaches can see how opposition coaches are countering our game plan but I think with the group we have they realise they just don't have the cattle with the football smarts/skills to adapt during games nor to learn something new. An analogy is when a teacher takes on a class of slow learners they start by keeping things simple because too much information would lose their attention and go over their heads. This is why we are competitive against the lower sides as they are simply not capable of playing the type of game to beat us. The pies, cats, dons etc do have the skill and smarts to execute hence we struggle against them.

Short version.

1. Rock up to ground
2. Put your teams kit on and run out.
3. Tell RFC leaders early in the game what a loser club they are and watch them go into their shell.
4. Just pressure them and if there is any resistance that persists repeat step 3.
5. If you have successfully completed steps 1-4 toy with them as you wish. Your victories can range from comfortable 5-6 goal win.
Inaccurate but standard 7-8 goal win.
Lairising 8-10 goal win.
Clinical10-13 goal win.
Brutal 13-16 goal win
Crush into fine powder 100+ point win.

Short version might be easier for some players to understand too!  ;D

I think we need to start teaching the players how to combat one on one footy for a start. Block and shepherd to create space to run/lead into to. Dummy lead. Create overlap with run etc etc. We just don't seem to either have the fitness, intent or ability to 'break a tag' across the ground. Cotch needs to give some lessons I feel.
