Bowden an outside chance for Friday night

Apparently Joel has pulled up pretty well from the operation and is an outside chance to play friday night.

There is nothing stopping him in regards to the injury, only depends on how he feels and if the swelling has gone down.

Yep - saw him on the news and he didn't look too bad at all - a lot better than me when I had my last wisdom tooth ripped.

Tigers want Bowden to face up

Richmond defender Joel Bowden will be given every opportunity to take his position in the Tigers' line-up for Friday night's clash with Melbourne, despite fracturing a cheekbone last week.

Bowden received the injury in an accidental head clash with teammate Chris Hyde during the Tigers' thrilling win over the Brisbane Lions last Saturday night. He had surgery on Monday night and Richmond coach Terry Wallace yesterday flagged a possible early return for the defender.

A better-than-expected recovery from the operation has led Wallace to open the door for the 2004 club champion to play.

"We will just monitor him as the week goes on; if he is any chance, we will give him right to the death knock to have that opportunity," Wallace said. "To be honest, it was nowhere near the swelling that we expected."

The coach said Bowden was in a "pretty jovial sort of mood" despite the injury.

Pitted against the attacking Demons, Richmond is hopeful on Bowden and confident that ruckman Greg Stafford can return for the match after an ankle injury.

"He trained today and he was out running laps - that was a positive sign," Wallace said of Stafford. "He has obviously got the rest of the week - it's only a short week because of the Friday night - but I intend playing him if he's right to play."

I saw that too CUB on Sports Tonight. For someone who just had surgery on his face the day before Joel looked ok and had only minimal swelling around the right cheek.

he wouldnt wear head gear, its is cheek bone and he would have a titanium  plate inserted, his actual cheek would be stronger now. the only thing hlding him back would be pain and swelling, if the pain and swelling has gone he will be right to play

Nathan Burke and Phil Narkle (sp?) wore helmets at the Saints. I can't remember if their footy careers crossed or not.

Browny breaking his leg has taken the attention away from another gutsy Tiger out there on Firday night. Courageous effort by Joel to get up and play a whole game of AFL footy just 4 days after having two plates shoved in his face to protect his fractured cheekbone. Not forgetting he's copped a fair bit over his footy career for being "soft". Just goes to show no AFL player is soft.

Agreed it took courage ot get out there but I do wonder if it actually helped the team. He seemed (quite rightly I might add) quite tentative early in the game.

And I reckon Brad (I need another rest this week) Miller is in trouble again. He should go for that whack to Joel's head. Fair dinkum the bloke is a dill
