Tasmania wins division two title

TASMANIA has won the division two title despite losing the final game of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships to the NSW/ACT Rams by 18 points.

NSW/ACT, Queensland and Tasmania all won two second-division games for the carnival, but Tasmania claimed the title with a superior percentage.

The Rams ended Tasmania's hopes of going through the championships unbeaten with their 6.10 (46) to 4.4 (28) win, which was led by captain Lloyd Perris.

Perris gathered 21 disposals and worked tirelessly throughout the game. He sent the ball inside 50 on four occasions, had three clearances and also laid eight tackles.

It closed a consistent championships for Perris, whose endurance, work ethic, leadership and skills inside the contest are his main traits.

Perris is a scholarship holder with the Sydney Swans, which means the club can automatically list him at the NAB AFL Draft with their last selection.

Michael Gibbons continued his reliable efforts through the Rams' midfield, while Isaac Heeney, eligible for next year, provided run and drive.

Marking forward Max King followed his four-goal effort in round four with another three majors against Tasmania.

Zac Webster was Tasmania's best in a sluggish outing at Victoria Park, gathering 20 touches and kicking a classy third-quarter goal.

After some excellent form in previous weeks, Tasmania's star midfielder Kade Kolodjashnij (15 disposals) and ruckman Toby Nankervis (17 disposals) had quieter days.

Late goal to Hammelmann sinks NT

QUEENSLAND pair Lachie Weller and Liam Dawson strengthened their claims as players to watch with impressive displays in their side's three-point win over Northern Territory on Thursday.

Northern Territory looked set to clinch its first victory of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in the final round before Queensland big man Matt Hammelmann dribbled through a goal with less than four minutes to play.

It was the final score of Queensland's 7.4 (46) to 6.7 (43) win, which was played in blustery and chilly conditions at Victoria Park in Melbourne.

Weller and Dawson, both level one AIS-AFL Academy members, are eligible for the 2014 NAB AFL Draft and have shown enough to suggest they will be prominent prospects next season.

Weller, the brother of Gold Coast midfielder Maverick, had 18 disposals and was smart with the ball, while Dawson is a mid-sized rebounding defender who had a game-high 24 touches and kicked a goal.

Isaac Conway had 22 disposals, while Tyler Cornish had 15 disposals and laid 11 tackles in a typically determined showing.

The win followed Queensland's last-quarter heroics against NSW-ACT last Saturday, when they booted five goals to none in the final term to snatch a nine-point win.

Northern Territory has been largely uncompetitive throughout the Championships but saved their best performance for last, with Abraham Ankers showing some dash through the midfield.

Ankers is small (173cm and 66kg) but he gathered 20 disposals and kicked two goals for NT, while Daniel Cox, another smaller midfielder, burrowed into stoppages and had 16 disposals.

My cousin's young bloke.  Made the AIS Level 1 squad this year and has just turned 17 so is still eligible for next year's Under 18 championships.  Was told this week that he will most likely be playing the full season with the Lion's reserves side in the NEAFL next year after playing the last few games with them recently.  Played full back today but has been spending most of this season on the wing in rep football or key forward at club level.  He's a good kid so hope he can keep improving and make next year's draft.

A bit more on Liam.  He was named in the best players for Queensland in every game over the U18 Championships and then today won the MVP for Qld and was in a 3-way tie for the Harrison Medal for best player in Division 2.  Not a bad effort for an underage kid and strengthens his chances of making the AIS Level 2 squad next year.  Fingers crossed.

Yeah OE, it's all looking good at this early point.  Lions have been managing his training/playing for a bit of this season and will have full control next year.  He's not fussed where he goes - just wants to hear his name called - and there's a lot of water to flow between now and then but he's doing everything he can at present to make it.

Three tie for Division Two medal

FOR the first time there has been a three-way tie for the Harrison Medal, with Tasmanians Kade Kolodjashnij and Toby Nankervis and Queensland's Liam Dawson sharing the honour.

The medal is presented to the player voted the best of the Division Two competition, with the three judged the standouts.

Kolodjashnij's consistency throughout Tasmania's title-winning campaign was evident, particularly in the midfield and off half-back.

He moves nicely across the ground, is the perfect size for a modern player and likes to sweep forward and impact the scoreboard, all traits which will likely see him picked in the top 10 or so selections in November.

Nankervis came into the championships wanting to prove himself as a prospect after failing to get drafted last year.

The Tasmanian ruckman did that, by working his way around the ground, picking up big possessions, shifting forward, and playing with more presence this year.

Dawson is not eligible for the NAB AFL Draft until next year but impressed throughout the national carnival.

A mid-sized defender and AIS-AFL Academy member, the 17-year-old closes down on opponents but creates run too. Against Northern Territory on Thursday, Dawson had a game-high 24 disposals.

Dawson was also awarded the Queensland most valuable player award, with Nankervis taking home that mantle for Tasmania.

Braedon McLean (Northern Territory) and Lloyd Perris (NSW/ACT) were judged their sides' most valuable players.
