Tigers still the butt of old jokesBy Adam Jones and Glenn Valencich

The more things change for Richmond
Richmond's 12-year September drought may be over but performances like that are the reason the Tigers are yet to garner the respect of the rest of the competition. How can the Tigers explain giving up a 52-point turnaround in the most important game of their past decade, against a side that couldn't even finish inside the top eight on merit? It wasn't just a dream week-one matchup that fell in Richmond's favour. The Tigers were also the beneficiaries of some shoddy umpiring at the MCG, particularly in the second term as they booted three goals from 50-metre penalties against the Blues. Their fortunes even extended to a colossal mistake from that dunderhead Mitch Robinson, who gifted the Tigers the first goal of the fourth term by punching a ball-up through the goal posts. Still, despite these intangibles falling their way, Richmond somehow managed to conjure up a 20-point loss in front of their long-suffering supporters, some of who looked ready to jump the fence and throttle their own players after the final siren.
So it's two steps forward and one step back for Richmond, who came so close to burying the demons of seasons past only for an old ghost to rise up and spook them again (losing to ninth, are you kidding). To those who withered through their Tigers' inglorious return to the finals, be comforted in knowing that your club will be better for this loss. The experience will galvanise the young playing group and, like steel over fire, will harden them for next year. In the meantime, you'll just have to wear the ribbing from your friends and co-workers. It is, after all, kind of amusing.
