Summary

* There's been speculation but not something I've thought about or are focused on. Focused on Richmond. Maybe something down the track. Wouldn't comment about it anyway.

* Full of conviction for the Tigers. Locked on and focused. Still a lot of work to do. We're on the march.

* Riewoldt - he had a right to feel disappointed to be left out of the leadership group. Benny said he's happy Jack is disappointed as it shows Jack wants to be a leader. Jack could have explained himself better (re: media ban) but all he meant was he wanted to focus more on his footy.

* Jake King - comfortable with the position the Club took. Benny said he's not into having rules governing player's private lives. We're mindful of stuff off-field and had specific discussions with Jake which Demetriou was claiming we hadn't had. We would treat any situation on its merits. If he brings any of these people again into the Club then he knows there will be consequences (re: his job). We have a rule no visits to the rooms pre-game anyway.

* Martin - comfortable with the position the Club took last year. Full confidence in Dan Richardson and his handling of the contract negotiation was brilliant. Benny said he doesn't know Connors but understands Connors is living with his girlfriend and Dusty is living with them. Connors has turned his life around apparently and we're comfortable with Dusty living there.

* Our mantra in the last few years has been building sustained success. So backing up finals again is what we want.

I didn't see it but my gut feel is if he was seen as a potentials candidate a few years ago, you'd have to think that his performance in recent years would only enhance his chances. Would be no surprise at all if there were quarters trying to convince him

Andrew Demetriou’s AFL CEO position at the moment, didn’t deny interest

IF Richmond boss Brendon Gale is thinking about applying for the role of AFL chief, he’s keeping that under his hat.

Gale told Nine’s The Sunday Footy Show his thoughts were on the job at hand with the Tigers.

Media reports have linked Gale with a possible run for the top job, following Andrew Demetriou’s announcement that 2014 will be his 11th and final season as league chief.

Demetriou’s deputy Gillon McLachlan is considered to be the frontrunner, but not a certainty, to take over next year.

“I have been touted. It’s flattering that some people see me in that role,” Gale said.

“But it’s not something that I’ve thought a lot about. Right now I’m very much focused on Richmond.

“With Andrew confirming his position, there has been a lot of speculation.

“There will continue to be a lot of speculation.

“It’s something I haven’t thought a lot about and if I do at that stage, it’s something I probably wouldn’t comment on.”

Like Demetriou, the highly regarded Gale is a former chief of the AFL Players’ Association.

Essendon great and prominent media commentator Matthew Lloyd says Gale should think strongly about putting his hand up.

“He’d be a great CEO of the AFL,” Lloyd said after watching Gale’s interview.

“He doesn’t want to put it out there because of his job at Richmond.

“But I think he wants the job. That’s how I viewed that.”

Gale non-committal on AFL CEO talk

RICHMOND chief Brendon Gale has stopped short of declaring his interest in the AFL's top job, but says he's flattered to be considered a contender.

Speaking on Channel Nine's Sunday Footy Show, Gale denied the League had approached him to replace outgoing CEO Andrew Demetriou, who has announced 2014 will be his last season at the helm.

Demetriou's deputy Gillon McLachlan is the favourite to take over in the hot seat, however Gale has also been touted as a potential successor.

"It's flattering that some people see you in that role, but it's not something that I've thought a lot about," Gale said.

"Right now I'm very, very much focused on Richmond as we all are down there and getting ourselves back up and firing.

"But as to whether it's something I'm interested in down the track – it's probably something I wouldn't comment on."

Gale played 244 games for Richmond and is credited for helping turn around the Tigers' off-field fortunes since rejoining the club five years ago from the AFL Players' Association.

"I'm fortunate enough and privileged to be part of a really good team at Richmond, and a lot of really good people who have all contributed to that club," Gale said.

"I guess people associate me with that, that's fine, but I think there's a lot of other great contenders (for the AFL's CEO role) as well."

Gale admitted it would be a tough time to leave the Tigers without having achieved the on-field success the club desperately craves.

"No doubt, were that to be the case," he said.

"I'm just absolutely full of conviction for the Tigers. We're a team that's really locked on and focused and we're encouraged by the progress we've made as a footy club, but gee, we've got a hell of a lot of work to do.

"It's exciting and bloody nerve-wracking at times too, but we're certainly on the march."

Returning to finals for back-to-back appearances for the first time since 1975 would be a "reasonable result" at Punt Road this season, according to Gale.

"I think it's really important that we back up again and get in the finals, perhaps win a final, get some of that really high-intensity experience," he said.

"I think that would be a reasonable result, but who knows."

In the wide-ranging interview, Gale said Jake King has been made aware that his career would be on the line if he brought notorious figures such as former bikie chief Toby Mitchell into the club again.

"I think we'd be having a discussion about his job," Gale said.

The Richmond chief also said the club had no issue with Dustin Martin moving in with sacked ex-Tiger Daniel Connors and that he was "happy" Jack Riewoldt was disappointed to be left out of Richmond's leadership group.

"I think he was right to feel disappointed, I think that tells me that Jack ultimately wants to be a leader," Gale said.

"I'm actually happy he's disappointed … we're really proud of the progress he's made in the last couple of years."

Richmond's Jake King faces sack if he brings Toby Mitchell to club again
Cooma Express
March 30, 2014

Richmond stands by its treatment of Jake King over the issue of mixing with former bikie gang boss Toby Mitchell - despite criticism from AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou - but says if Mitchell is invited to the club again, King faces the sack.

Tigers CEO Brendon Gale said King can still mix with Mitchell outside the club, but if he was again invited into the rooms, the consequences for King would be "a discussion about his job".

Gale said Richmond believed players should take responsibilities for their own lives and make their own choices.

"We prefer he doesn't mix with these sorts of people," Gale told the Channel Nine Footy Show. "But he's a strong-willed, not particularly impressionable fellow."

Gale took umbrage at Demetriou's hardline stance on the issue, saying the Tigers had taken the problem seriously and had discussed it with King. "I'm comfortable with the position we have taken with Jake," he said.
