wayne campbel imo is still our captain , maybe not by title but as an onfield leader! week in week out he shows that even though his body may be aging his mind and leadership just gets better!

however

this week, joel bowden proved once again why he should have been our captain by title and  not sugar!!!  joel puts his body on the line, always gives his all and hits targets more frequently and makes less errors than sugar!!!

his courages act and second effort when sliding for the ball copped him a kick/knee in the face ,. couls have broken his bone again!!!  he played days after surgery, in the wiz cup against the pies he played on with bruised a cracked ribs. he is a true tough leader now and i thuing that terry has been gr8 all yr except for 2 points

1/ joel should have been captain and
2/ tiv should have been dropped by now( but who knows what terry is up to with him)

Joel wasn't going to get the captaincy after only 15 weeks of good form and a number of years of inconsistency before that. It got him a B&F but a captaincy candidate needs to show conistency and quality over a few years. Sugar has his faults as none of the 4 were clear favourites but he's been to the top of the tree twice and starred on the biggest day of all whereas the other 3 have hardly played finals. Sugar also plays permanently in the guts whereas the other 3 don't (Browny has spurts as part of the rotation but mainly plays forward, Richo is a forward, Joel plays in defence).

I don't see the choice of captain as an issue. We had our best start to a season in 10 years before we lost our most talented player and in a year where most people were expecting us to finish bottom 4. So Sugar must be doing his job. He's no Voss or Hird in his prime as he's more in the Cambo mold himself but I reckon he's has had a solid year.

Agree Cambo is still our captain in the way he directs and educates teammates on the field especially the last 2 weeks but he can't play a whole game sadly anymore. He had 99 minutes ground-time yesterday which was more than he typically has now.

It was interesting yesterday that after he kicked that goal in the 2nd quarter Cambo took himself off. Gotta say he looked absolutely stuffed at the time.

I must say I reckon he has been especially good with Richo this year. Taking the ball off the big fella and doing the "look at me, look at me" getting Richo concentrating - terrific stuff

Cambo commented in an aftermatch interview that he feels refrshed after the break, and would benefit from two week recoveries. What chance he does play on next year in a "one week on, one week off" sort of role? He's shown he still can get the job done in spurts. We can afford to keep him with the young list, and he can get the few extra games needed for the big 300...

but imo i dont buy that crap that just because sugar was in 2  premierships he deserves the captaincy. i dont swallow that. and nor that he play in the guts because i can tell u now that next yr sugar will be a permanent hbflanker and not a midfielder. in his premiership sides he played as a hbf and only relieved slightly onball and thats where terry sees him playing for us!!! his disposal isnt no where near as good as ppl give him credit and he is no where near hard enough nor under every pack, thats where foley will be next yr in his place.  so we will have a captain playing out of the middle in th efuture.

joel had a few inconsistant yrs but he has been a very good player 4 us playing under many dud coaches, sugar only had spud 4 two yrs!!!!

joel should have been captain and richo vc imo and richo proved on the w/e that he would have also been a worthy choice. he was the one who made sure after tucks 2 goals that got us the momentum back that every player went to tuck and showed their support 4 him!!!! the talkers on th ew/e were richo jopel and campbo and u never ever see sugar motivate and talk it up to players much at all. just my opinion

Joel has only reached the heights of his current form since round 6 last year after he was dropped back to Coburg. Before that his career was drifting and poor efforts such as that soft one hand attempt at a mark against the Pies in front of the RFC members wing and turnovers in defence (remember that Crows game when he kept playing on from the kick-ins and stuffing up)  made him after Daffy left to go to Sydney the supporters whipping boy.

Johnson on the other hand has been a model of consistency throughout his career at two different clubs when at the second club Richmond he didn't have the likes of Riccuito, Macleod, Goodwin and Edwards to take opposition attention away from him as some Tiger supporters were worried about when he first arrived. As I said above Sugar isn't an A-grade player (only Browny is at Tigerland) but he's averaging almost 25 possessions a game (same as Joel funnily enough) and has had only 2 games below 20 and in one of those he was coming back from 3 weeks out due to injury so he can be excused. As for the 2 GFs - standing up in finals in what proves you're a top footballer. The best deliver when it matters and Johnson was arguably second best on ground behind Macleod.

I not knocking Joel and think he's been great the last year and a half but I don't see the choice of captain as an issue right now and I think we underrate Sugar compared to others in the yellow and black.

IMO we the supporters only see a very small part of it (being captain and what he does). We don't see what goes on behind closed doors - in the inner sanctum if you like. What I have noticed this season is that Knae Johnson is more vocal on the field than he has ever been and that's great but it isn't just about the on field stuff. It is about how the players respond to him in the rooms, at training etc. By all reports his professionalism in traingin and preparation is the second to none at the club

It has been suggested by the media that when the players were polled as to who they thought would be the best captain Johnson won the players vote hands down - this speaks volumes I reckon. He obviously has the respect of his teammates and the coaching department. I honestly believe we have the right person for the job

I remember in 1988 when Hawthorn won the flag Russell Greene basically played the whole year sitting on the bench the first half of games and then coming on in the second half when the pace had died down and being extremely effective. Maybe thats the go for Wayne.

Both of them were terrific on Saturday and really lead by example.

As for Tivas, he hasnt been setting the world on fire but over the last month he has been more than serviceable in my opinion.

Tivas could be a very damaging player for us come finals time when the grounds get a little drying and the weather a little warmer.
