Richmond is hopeful its star full-back Darren Gaspar will only be missing for a fortnight after scans on Monday revealed only a minor strain of his injured hamstring.
However the loss of the dual All-Australian defender is a massive blow to the Tigers, who are also without their second best defender for the next month in Andrew Kellaway as he recovers from a broken jaw sustained in round 15 against Essendon.
Gaspar has been one of the major players behind Richmond's resurgence this season but after Saturday's 69-point hammering from St Kilda, the Tigers are now hanging onto eighth place by just a game with last year's grand finalists Brisbane and Port Adelaide just outside the eight putting pressure on them.
And Richmond now has to travel to AAMI Stadium to face Port this week without both Gaspar and Kellaway, leaving them without an obvious opponent for Power skipper Warren Tredrea, who is likely to now be manned by Ray Hall.
Richmond football manager Paul Armstrong said Gaspar felt a twinge in his hamstring as he stretched to make a spoil late in Saturday's game against the Saints at the MCG.
"It's a grade one hamstring strain but he didn't tear it which is good," Armstrong told afl.com.au on Monday.
"It's a 2-3 week injury but we think it might be a bit back-related and if that is the case it might only be a two-week injury but we will have to wait and see."
Armstrong admitted the Tigers faced a major defensive challenge this week taking on the reigning premier without their two best defenders.
"We just seem to keep losing experienced players but it gives an opportunity for someone else," he said.
The good news for the Tigers is the three most likely candidates to replace Gaspar - Jay Schulz, Kelvin Moore and Daniel Jackson - were all in the best for Coburg in the VFL on the weekend while ruckman Greg Stafford will also be available this week after completing a two-match suspension.
And Armstrong said skipper Kane Johnson, who had been in doubt for the Saints' clash with a knee injury which caused him to miss the previous week's win over Essendon, had pulled up well following Saturday's clash and would again be available to lead the Tigers against Port.
