Benny Gale on SEN - 22/08/15
« on: August 22, 2015, 12:47:11 PM »
Benny Gale was just on SEN ...

* Cotch as captain has learnt you need to be yourself. He is not a vocal captain off the field but he demonstrates leadership through his standards and relentless attack on footy. Liked Cotch physically going up to Hodge prior to the first bounce in the Hawthorn game. It showed we were on in the 5 minutes. That post the loss to Freo where we lost the game off our own racquet - it showed being guttered turned to anger and then to resolution and wanting to make amends during the week.

* Robbo said Richmond this year has shown it to becoming a leader of the comp. Being the first to say they would wear the Indigenous jumper and the support for the Maddie game. They wouldn't have done that 3 years ago. Gale said credit should go to Nick Riewoldt, St Kilda as well as Jack for the Maddie game.

* Where is the list at? We're a very good side when we have our best players on the park but if we lose our better players for whatever reason we quickly fall away unlike other top sides.

* Will you go after Henderson? Believe our KPP stocks are reasonable solid with a number of young KPPs running around in the VFL side. More after mids and mids who can play forward. Benny didn't give any names but he said we'd love a few players in our side.

* Kingy said today is 6th vs 12th so why are we nervous? Benny replied that Collingwood is a very good side and played well last week against the Swans. Robbo and Dermie both said it's games like today that define if Richmond has improved. Gale agreed.

* Robbo praising the turnaround of the club since 2010. Gale said it's not all his doing. We had the advantage of a large latent supporter base. If you're open, transparent and tell then where you're going then people will get on board. The important thing is there's a shared understanding within the club of where we are and where we are going. We've still got a long way to go. Next step? Important bringing talent into the club. There's the northern academies. We'll just continue to invest in our recruiting and development and making sure we're right in that area.

* Will you go after a non-AFL recruit such as from the States? We have Ivan Soldo who is showing signs at VFL level. We have a guy in the States involved in the NCAA over in the states who gives us inside info. Almost got Mason Cox.

* We have some clubs whose business model is unsustainable and it's not a managerial problem. It's a stadium deal issue. He wouldn't support the AFL paying off debts as that doesn't solve the underlying problem. More help through other ways.

* Kingy said Yarran is a good for Richmond playing midfield/half-back using his kicking skills. Robbo disagreed and said Yarran needs to sort out his life first before he goes anywhere. Dermie said Yarran needs a club with a strong leadership group with a strong constitution towards their club.

Interesting article in AFR today about the Tigers.
Record revenue this year, new naming rights up for grabs, 3rd highest in TV ratings.

Another profit this year, this not including finals.

Wow wee the AFL will be bending over for us and not before time

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale believes the Tigers’ roller-coaster 2014 season has played a key role in the impressive development of the Club’s playing leadership group this year.

The Tigers recovered from a poor first half of last season to clinch a finals berth on the back of a stirring nine-game winning streak.

With two home-and-away rounds remaining this year, they are fifth on the ladder, two games and significant percentage inside the top eight.

“In hindsight, I think the experience last year of being 3-10, and massively under the pump as a whole club and team, being pulled apart by everyone, but getting into the finals from there, was a great experience for our leadership group,” Gale said on SEN.

“I see them this year evolving individually and collectively as a group.  I see them impacting moments.  I see them winning those big moments, which adds up to quarters and adds up to games.

“So, that’s an area where I think they’ve definitely improved . . .”
