Never understood the price for bottled water. Even $3 for a 600ml bottle is nearly 4 times the price per litre of petrol.

Was at Etihad on Saturday night and 2 waters, chips and a spinach and feta roll cost $25.

2 bottles of water at a foo fighters concert, was that to cool yourself down in the moshpit or was it to wash down the spinach and feta as you watched on from the stands? 
I was there and noticed the flagrant and disgraceful profiteering on the $6 bottled water. This was highway robbery on a muggy night, with a closed roof, and 45000 punters sucking all of the oxygen out of the air at the artist formerly known as telstra dome.

I am not sure of the politics behind this but I am glad the MCG has put a bit of pressure on the management of the 'Spencer St Football Hall', they are ruining the game with their over emphasis on extra 'entertainment' at the footy, blaring advertising at 115db and gouging the patrons by not even letting them in with a packet of salt and vinegar chips or a bottle of coke, even though you may have bought them at the donut stand outside the gate who would also be paying fees to them for the privilege.

It was because hour and a half before they even started, the roof was closed, it was awfully stuffy especially sitting in level 1 and I was driving (so the beers were paced) if you really needed to know.

Etihad Stadium joins food price war with discounts on Sundays

Etihad Stadium has responded to the footy price war instigated by the MCG with its own cheaper food, including $3 pies on Sundays.

The pie will be the cheapest at any AFL venue and forms a key plank of the ground's bid to attract more fans to games on Sundays, which will include free entry for children under 15.

And the ground's notoriously changeable grass surface will be put to the test with kick-to-kick to be trialled after Sunday games in the first part of the season.

"Match day experience" has become a buzzword recently in the AFL, as the league seeks to make 2015 the "year of the fan" with improved experiences to boost flagging crowd numbers.

The average attendance at Etihad Stadium dipped under 30,000 last season, its lowest for the past decade, and the ground has been dealt 19 Sunday games this year, which can be a hard sell for footy fans.

However the discounts don't go as far as those announced earlier this month by the MCG, which slashed prices across most of its menu. Chips, pies and hot dogs at the MCG will cost $4. A bottle of water at the MCG will drop from $5 to $3.

Etihad will match the $4 price for regular hot chips across all match days but won't be cutting the price of bottled water. Instead it will install 10 water fountains around the ground to provide free water.

Beer will be cheaper but also smaller. A 425ml schooner of beer, which will cost $7.40, will be joined by a 285ml pot for $5.

Etihad Stadium CEO Paul Sergeant said the focus of the cheaper food and water was about bringing families back to the ground, particularly on Sundays. Included in the offering will be free popcorn and fairy floss for children.

Food and drink sales jump at AFL games after price cuts

FOOTY fans have voted with their mouths and wallets in strong support of cut-price food served at AFL matches in Melbourne so far this season.

MCG and Etihad Stadium chiefs have reported a feeding frenzy by fans since winding the clock back on the price of footy fare such as pies, chips and bottled water.

Etihad Stadium chief Paul Sergeant said pie sales had increased threefold since the venue started selling them for just $3 on Sundays and were 2.5 times higher than last year.

Sales of Four ‘N Twenty pies increased by almost 10,000 at the MCG in round one compared to the opening week of the 2013 season when similar crowds packed the home of football.

Hot chips sales soared by 7000 at the MCG in round one after their price was slashed from $5.60 to $4.

And 2500 more bottles of water were sold at the stadium in round one after the price was cut from $5 to $3.

The MCG this year cut prices of popular food by up to 40 per cent in response to growing supporter angst at the high cost of feeding their families at matches.

Etihad Stadium followed suit last month with a suite of food and beverage discounts including free popcorn and cheap pies on Sundays, a $1.60 discount on regular chips and $5 pots of beer.

Mr Sergeant said fans welcomed the changes, with hot chip sales doubling and beer consumption up 10 per cent.

“While the season is only in its fifth round, our catering ­figures show just over two thirds of patrons are buying stadium food and drinks,’’ he said. “It’s an extremely encouraging trend.’’

More than 2000 packs of popcorn have been handed out to children at Etihad Stadium during Sunday matches in the first two rounds.

MCC spokesman Shane Brown said there had also been a “significant uplift’’ in sales of healthier options such as sushi and salad at the MCG.

AFL Fans’ Association president Gerry Eeman applauded the price cuts but said supporters now faced a food variable pricing policy at different AFL grounds.
