20 May 2015, 07:43PMA lot has been made recently of the phrase ‘the Richmond way’ used by Tigers coach Damien Hardwick to describe how his team aims to play.
For much of this young season their performances have failed to emulate that ethos but forward Jack Riewoldt is confident that will soon change.
“It’s a set of behaviours and standards,” said Riewoldt on SEN radio.
“Basically it’s the framework of what we base our club around and the game plan on.
“It’s something that we’ve worked on that has evolved over a number of years and how we expect to play every week.”
The Tigers defeated Collingwood on the weekend by five points in a much-need victory to somewhat get their year back on track.
Club captain Trent Cotchin had 32 disposals and kicked two goals in a performance that was applauded by everyone around the league.
However, his critics still say those great games do not come around often enough.
“Certainly he was fantastic on Sunday, especially late, a really great captain’s game, he stood up when we needed him,” said Riewoldt.
“Your best players can play at that standard if they get help from the guys around them.
“Having Brett (Deledio) back in the side and fully fit obviously takes a load off him.”
Umpiring has been a big issue this week after Pies coach Nathan Buckley slammed the treatment Travis Cloke has received from the officials.
Riewoldt does think that forwards are missing out on a few free kicks in certain situations.
“Certainly they miss holding behind the ball a lot, which I thought the fourth umpire might help the eradicate that,” he said.
“Defenders have become good at using their chest and hips to push you under the ball if you’re jumping at it.
“It’s hard to umpire AFL footy, don’t get me wrong.”

May 20, 2015 - 8:11PM Umpires often miss defenders holding onto forwards behind the ball, Richmond star Jack Riewoldt said.
When asked on radio station SEN which potential free-kicks umpires were missing, Riewoldt said they frequently did not notice defenders holding onto their opponents behind play.
"The backmen have become really smart, they can spoil with their chest and their hips and move you under the ball as you're jumping at it," he said.
"They're the ones I see as a little bit dangerous, which might be free kicks."
But he acknowledged that umpired AFL football was difficult and said he did not envy the jobs of the men in white.
Richmond is positioned at number 10 on the ladder, after notching up three wins and four losses. But they eked out a thrilling five-point victory over the more highly ranked Collingwood on Sunday and will play Port Adelaide this weekend.
"It's good to have a win, against the arch rivals as well, Collingwood," Riewoldt said. "I haven't beaten them in the nine years I've been at the Tiges, 164 games and finally got over the black and white."
Riewoldt, who stands at 195cm, said life as a tall forward had changed over his career. "Key forwards aren't kicking a hundred goals anymore, 60 is a good year, contested marks are probably down," he said.
"I've had to evolve as the game's evolved, playing a bit further up the ground, I probably played a bit more like a half-forward on the weekend."
