Should we have done the Brown trade?
« on: September 06, 2005, 02:15:07 PM »
Just noticed he will be 28 once the season starts, we are still a few years away from thinking about Premiership and by this time he will be into his 30's.

The picks we traded for him were Pick 6 who was Kepler Bradley, who is looking like a pretty good CHB prospect (something we could use), and the players who were picked after him include Tenace, Stanton :'( and Chaplin, another promising tall defender.

Pick 20 was S.Butler who is going alright for West Coast, and players picked after him include................... well a lot of guys i haven't heard of before  :lol + our guys!  :thumbsup

But still, now that i look back on it, i would rather have a Bradley/Tenace/Stanton/Chaplin and maybe some other young kid then Brown considering the current position we are in with our rebuilding.

Now this might ruffle a few feathers, and if we were a year or two close to a premiership then i probably wouldn't post this but IMO our list doesn't have the potential to win a premiership for at least the next 3-4 season, and by then Brown will be 32 and Richo will 35 and retred you'd think.

Fair enough, i don't expect anyone to really like this thread, so insult away, i'm just throwing it out there.

Probably in hindsight the thread was a bit of a stupid idea, but it might be an interesting thread to come back to in 3-4 years.

It's not a bad thread idea, maybe people are still sensitive about Pinky and his devastating injury.

Who would've known that he would go down with a career threatening injury. You're right Razor, it could be an interesting thread in 5 years because Tenace etc may also go down with serious injuries, and if that were the case, we'd be right to pick Brown.

If Brown wasn't injured, would you have posted this thread? ;)
Do you know what year Brown will retire?
Too many variables.

Possibly.

No, but methinks his performances will start to decline soon.

A fair enough question to ask but Browny brought a standard of footy and footy smarts with him in respect to his peers that hasn't been seen at Tigerland in a very long time. It's good for our cubs to learn what standard and class they should be trying to emulate.

The horrific injury was unpredictable so I don't think that can be included in the judgement of the trade even if in the worst case scenario he never plays footy again. Something rare like that could have happened to the young kid we picked up instead with pick 6 and we'd be saying we should have gone for Browny when we had the chance.

Rememeber we had picks 20 and 21 (got one of them for Holland). So it was Browny for pick 6 + Holland essentially.

I have no doubt we did the right thing by getting Browny to the club just look at our results after he went down, he'll poll in 6 of the 10 games he played this season.

He'll probably be leading the Brownlow count after 9 rounds. Only Cousins IMO would be close at that stage. You'd reckon he'll get 3 votes from the Freo (34 possies), Port (6 goals) and Pies (5 goals in the last quarter) then probably 1s and 2s from our other wins. About 12-13 votes from just 10 games :o. If he hadn't got injured, on that form he would have romped it home.
