Dimma's post-match presser ...

* You know you're in for a tough slog of a game when there's 160 contested ball. We take the 30 point win in those horrid conditions. We know we have areas that need improvement. Credit to Essendon who have played pretty well last two weeks.

* Side has grown and matured. Lids and Ivan stood up with Cotch out. We started poorly but regrouped.

* Saints playing pretty well at Etihad but I'm not going to do the ladder permutations.

* Lids is okay and up and walking around. I do have an opinion about it. The sling is part of AFL footy but it's the lifting that is dangerous. Doesn't believe Dempsey meant it.

* Lennon was terrific. Improved the defensive side of his game which was a deficiency of his and was why he wasn't in the side. Stiff to be sub last week as was Lloyd this week. An important part of our future.

* Thomas - knows he'll be called upon and we can rely on him when he is called up.

* Cotch - been battered up and needed a rest. With Thomas we could rest Cotch.

* We gave up 4 goals from In50 stoppages. Usually that happens over 10 weeks not one game.

* Etihad indoors requires fast ball movement. We haven't played there for a while so it will present another challenge.

Tigers have maturity for finals football, says Hardwick

RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick believes the growing maturity of his team to win in contrasting conditions will hold it in good stead for the finals, after slogging its way to a 27-point win over Essendon on a rain-sodden MCG on Saturday night.

Hardwick was pleased that his players were able overcome a determined Bombers outfit in a contested-ball fest in the wet without the leadership of skipper Trent Cotchin, who is managing a back issue.

"There's no doubt the side's grown, and you expect that over a period of time," Hardwick said.

"Especially without the captain there, but with Ivan (Maric) and Brett (Deledio) standing up, I thought they were terrific in those areas.

"(With) the maturity of the group, I can't pat them on the back enough in that area – how we can win a fast, uncontested game, but we've also got the ability to play in the arm wrestles as well, as we've shown over the course of the year.

"They've got a greater understanding now of when and what is required."

Richmond moved into fourth spot, but it might only be momentarily, with Sydney facing St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

To earn the double chance, the Tigers will need to beat North Melbourne next week and hope other results go their way – that the Swans lose to either the Saints or Gold Coast, and the Western Bulldogs don't have a huge percentage-boosting win over the Brisbane Lions.

"We can hope," Hardwick said when asked whether he'd be barracking for an upset on Sunday.

"The Saints are playing some good footy at Etihad (Stadium) but I'm not one to do the ladder predictor; I just worry about what we can control, and that's our game versus North Melbourne next week.

"They were probably disappointed with their performance today and they'll be looking to come out and rectify that, so it's going to be a really hot contest.

"We'll just wait and see what happens …

"It's going to be a different game next week. It's going to be inside at Etihad (with) fast ball movement. We haven't played there for a while, so it's going to be another challenge for us."

Hardwick was satisfied to post a comfortable victory but wasn't happy with the Tigers' stoppage work in their defensive arc.

"We gave up 4.1 from forward 50 stoppages, which is horrendous," he said.

"You might give up four goals in 10 games (but) we gave up four goals in one. Take out those four goals and we only give up three or four possibly for the game. We can't have that."

Hardwick was relieved that Deledio appeared to escape injury after being heavily dumped in a sling tackle by Courtenay Dempsey.

"The lifting, to me, is dangerous," he said of the incident.

"The sling, to me, is – I'd better be careful how I say this – is part of AFL footy. But as soon as you lift, I think you're in a bit of trouble. You probably owe the duty of care.

"I've got no doubt Courtenay didn't mean it … but now it's probably changed a little bit with the goalposts moving in that area.

"I'm just glad everyone walked away OK."

The Tigers coach declared Cotchin would return for the clash with the Kangaroos. He said that if Saturday night's game had been a final, the skipper would have been "touch and go" to play.

"He's been a little bit sore, obviously, and he's been battered around for the last couple of weeks. To push it he probably could (have played) but the fact of the matter is he's too valuable a player to put in that situation," Hardwick said.

"We were quite happy to leave him out of the side this week and get him back for next week."

What the coaches say - Richmond

RICHMOND’S top-four aspirations are still alive after a tenacious 27-point win over Essendon at the MCG.

Richmond must now hope Sydney drops Sunday’s game against St Kilda before continuing its push for a finals double chance against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

“We can hope, sort of thing,’’ Hardwick said. “The Saints are playing some good footy at Etihad (Stadium) at the moment, they’re going OK.

“But I’m not one to do the ladder predictor, so I just worry about what we can control and that’s our game against North Melbourne next week. They’re probably disappointed with their performance today and they’ll be looking to come out and rectify that.’’

Hardwick expects to regain the services of skipper Trent Cotchin for Friday night’s clash, after he missed the Essendon match with back soreness.

“He’s been a little bit sore, obviously. He’s been battered around for a couple of weeks,’’ Hradwick said.

“To push it he probably could (have played against Essendon) but he’s too valuable a player to put in that situation.’’

Playmaker Brett Deledio will also be fine, despite coming from the ground midway through the final term after being slammed headfirst into the turf in an unusual tackle from Essendon’s Courtenay Dempsey.

Demspey lifted Deledio back and almost over his head in what resembled a professional wrestling move.

“I think the lift is the dangerous (aspect),’’ Hardwick said. “The sling to me is — be careful how I say thing — part of AFL football but as soon as you lift you’re probably in a little bit of trouble. You probably owe the duty of care.

“I’ve got no doubt Courtenay didn’t mean it, it was just one of those things how we tackle, but now it’s probably changed a little bit with the goalposts moving. I’m just glad everyone walked away OK.’’

A crowd of 37,864 watched Richmond struggle to put away the Bombers, in what was the final match of triple-premiership player Paul Chapman’s 280-game career.

Both teams formed a guard of honour for the ex-Geelong champion after the match.

“There were some areas of our game that we were disappointed with tonight,’’ Hardwick said. “We gave up 4.1 from forward-50 stoppages, which is horrendous.’’

"We can hope," said Richmond coach Damien Hardwick of his side's top-four hopes. "The Saints are playing some good footy at Etihad at the moment and are going OK.

"But I'm not one to do the ladder predictor. I just worry about what we can control, and that's our game against North Melbourne next week. They were probably disappointed with their performance today [against the Western Bulldogs] and they'll be looking to come out and rectify that, so it's going to be a really hot contest."

Hardwick said the Tigers still had plenty of room for improvement, lamenting the four goals of Essendon's total of just seven that they conceded from inside 50 stoppages. But he also believed the tough, slogging contest was good preparation for the finals.

"It was always going to be an arm wrestle," he said. "The conditions were pretty horrid out there for a period of time. Any time there's 160-odd contested ball [each], it's tight and tough. To get away with a 30-point win, we take it on the night."

Hardwick agreed Saturday's game was one the Tigers might have lost last year, at one stage having kicked just 1.6 despite dominating play and the inside 50 count. He also noted the win came without injured skipper Trent Cotchin, who is expected to return next week.

"I think there's no doubt the side has grown, and you expect that over a period of time, but especially without the captain there … it was a credit to our guys, I thought we controlled the arm wrestle towards the end."
