Chaplin on SEN today responding to the "tunnelling" claims ...

AUDIO: https://audioboom.com/boos/3548491-troy-chaplin-on-morning-glory

* It’s not a technique we go out with. Tunnelling is extremely dangerous. I had a free kick paid against me in the final quarter and I knew what it was for. But we certainly don’t go out with the intent to tunnel guys. It’s more just using your body to spoil.

* They’re big boys and once they get their arms at full reach, obviously you’re not going to be able to hit the ball. So you’ve got to try and find a way around it.

* It has been around for a while. It’s nothing we haven’t done for the whole year. So, it sort of begs the question, why it has been brought up now?

* It’s something we will continue to do. If we get picked up on it, then as I said, we’ll get picked up on it but we aren’t going out there intentionally to tunnel other guys.  That’s not part of us. We know the injuries that can be caused by that. It’s more or less using your body to try and use it as a spoiling mechanism and it’s been around for a long period of time, so we will continue to do it.

Actually SEN again played Petrie's reply to Dermie's comments this morning

2nd time I've heard it

Petrie's response on the wireless in tone doesn't sound to me as "balanced" as the grabs that were put on the article

He came across as being rapt that it had been bought up and was very quick to answer, don't think Derm had finished asking the question
"Oh yes I am a dreamer, I still see us flying high!"

That's how I read the state of play in that audio WP.

Chaps has alluded to why it was brought up and I think it was a set up and let's see how many free kicks are paid Sunday as a result

North's Scott Thompson weighs in on 'tunnelling' tactics

Daniel Cherny
The Age
September 11, 2015

Richmond's key defenders came under fire for alleged "tunnelling" tactics, but ahead of his side's final with the Tigers, North Melbourne full-back Scott Thompson says he employs similar means to his defensive rivals.

Tigers' backmen Alex Rance and Troy Chaplin were the subject of media scrutiny due to the way in which they played against North forwards Drew Petrie and Ben Brown in last Friday night's clash between the two sides at Etihad Stadium. It was suggested that the Tigers had deliberately pushed their opponents under the ball during a number of contests, leaving the Roos vulnerable to injury.

However Thompson came out in support of the Tigers defenders ahead of Sunday's elimination final this week, with positional ties seemingly just as strong as the intraclub bond.

"I haven't really seen too much of it. I heard about it. As a defender, I can't really say anything. I probably do it myself," Thompson said before the Roos' training session at Arden Street on Thursday afternoon.

"So our forwards have obviously seen it and they'll work through it. If they try it again, I'm sure Drew Petrie and Ben Brown have something to combat it.

"I don't think it's tunnelling if you get your hands on the ball, it's just body work.

"It's AFL, so you want a physical contest. If they're still going for the ball I don't see anything wrong with it."
