October 22, 2015A GAME of cat and mouse forced Richmond to wait until the final 30 minutes of the trade period to secure a deal for Chris Yarran.
Carlton knew it would send Yarran to Punt Rd for pick 19 but wanted to complete a swag of other trades before releasing him.
The Blues on Thursday landed pick 11 in the draft in a swap with the Western Bulldogs for selections 20 and 21 and tried, but failed, to recruit Greater Western Sydney’s Adam Tomlinson.
Yarran was off-loaded at the death to ensure the Blues weren’t in possession of selection 19 when they were dealing with the Dogs.
Stephen Silvagni’s daring list overhaul has handed Carlton four picks inside the top 20 for the first time in the club’s history — 1, 8, 11 and 19.
As late as Wednesday night the Blues were demanding Richmond surrender pick 12 to get its hands on Yarran.
Richmond football boss Dan Richardson admitted to frustration at the standoff.
“We were really confident he’d always end up at Tigerland, but things dragged on a little bit longer than we would have liked,” Richardson said.
“I lost a little bit more hair, not that I had much more to lose — but in the end it’s a good result for the club and I can tell you Chris is pumped to be a Tiger player.
“When the news came through he was really excited.”
Richardson said Yarran had been recruited to play as a rebounding defender, rather than a forward.
“I think that’s his preferred position and where he plays his best footy ... but he’s also capable as a small forward as well,” Richardson said.
“Dimma (coach Damien Hardwick) and the coaches will make that call ... but primarily the decision has been around another rebounding defender to help our run from half-back and complement Bachar (Houli) who probably plays a bit of a lone hand in that regard.”
Yarran’s manager, Paul Connors, said the 119-game Blues playmaker — pick 6 in the 2008 draft — was excited at the prospect of reigniting his career at Punt Rd.
“I was always confident that there was a mutual understanding that it was best for both parties to part ways,” Connors said.
“He’s 24, already back in training and looking forward to working with Damien Hardwick and Mark Williams and being a part of the Richmond footy club.”
Yarran has signed a three-year deal and joins Greater Western Sydney hard nut Jacob Townsend as Richmond’s only two acquisitions across the trade period.

Richmond tried to get Carlton a better pick for Chris YarranDaniel Cherny

October 22, 2015Richmond football manager Dan Richardson said despite some apprehension he did not lose belief the deal would be done.
"You're always a bit nervous when it gets to half an hour before the deadline … but we were fairly confident that in the end it would work out," Richardson said.
"We always thought pick 19 was a fair deal for both parties. Obviously we worked hard all week to get something a bit lower than that, but in the end that's what we had and it's great that Carlton accepted the pick."
Richardson confirmed pick 12 "was never on the table".
He thought Yarran could play at either end of the ground. "That's obviously up to [coach Damien Hardwick] and the coaching staff, but more than likely as a rebounding defender, but we're obviously well aware he's got some goalkicking ability as well."
Yarran had disciplinary issues at the Blues and was twice dropped this year to the VFL.
"I think a fresh start is what he was after," Richardson said.
