Dan Richardson interviews post-trade period
« on: October 22, 2015, 02:10:28 PM »
Dan Richardson was just on Trade Radio ...

* We're happy. We've been active enough during the trade period as we've satisfied our two key needs with Yarran & inside mid Townsend.

* Yarran will be used as a rebounding defender to help Bachar Houli out. He'll also be used forward by Dimma.

* We wouldn't have chased Chris if we didn't believe a fresh start will be helpful to him and his footy career.

* It's 3 year deal.

Carlton's McKay:

* In the end we did what was best for Yarran. Richmond did their best to get a lower pick.

great dan we secured a player who wanted to come to the club but nearly stuffed it up...of course we will say we have gotten what we wanted cause if you come out and said the complete opposite would look rather stupid wouldn't it hahah... still think we missed the boat with a couple specially finding a new small forward unless we are planning to play dids and martin up forward all year to give us that 20-30 goalls we need

“We clearly targeted Chris early in the trade period, as a player we believe will add great value to our playing list,” said Richmond’s General Manager of Football Dan Richardson.

“We’re pleased to have completed a trade to get him to the Club, and we look forward to him settling in at Tigerland.

“He will be 25 years of age when the 2016 season begins and we believe his best football is still ahead of him.”

Richardson: Tigers happy with landing targets
John Takemura
SEN
22 Oct 2015, 05:02PM

Despite not landing a superstar name, Richmond signed the particular targets they set out to pick-up, says General Manager of Football Dan Richardson.

“We’re happy, we targeted a rebounding defender and an inside midfielder as our key needs,” said Richardson on SEN’s The Run Home.

“Look I can understand some people’s sentiment around the star player, although we think Chris (Yarran) will become and has the ability to be a star and with Jacob Townsend obviously coming in as that bigger body inside mid.

“From a profile perspective maybe it’s not the player that some people might not have expected us to land we think he’ll come in and play a very valuable role for us.”

Carlton originally pushed for pick 12 in exchange for Yarran, but in the end settle for pick 19. Richardson says pick 12 was never on the table.

“No it wasn’t,” he said.

“We felt that all along that Chris was worth somewhere between pick 12 and 31, which is our second round pick.

“We worked hard to try and satisfy Carlton in their request for a later first round pick.

“I guess its semantics as to whether pick 19 is that, obviously it dragged out, but I think in the end it’s a fair result for both parties.

Despite being able to play as a small forward, Richardson expects Yarran to play his best footy across half back.

“He can kick goals running off half back, but has certainly shown the capacity to go forward as that smaller forward option as well,” said Richardson.

“We can see him doing a little both for us over the course of the year, but primarily I think that rebounding defender role is where we see him playing his best footy.”

Richardson admits it can be hard to balance spectator expectations of star players and doing too much to the list.

“I think it’s more important to rate clubs in terms of how they play and whether they improve,” he said.

“We felt we copped a bit of criticism last year during the trade period, but we feel we improved last year and we’ll improve again through the players we’ve brought in through this trade period.

“But, also most of our improvement going to come from within and the young players we have coming through.”

Richmond, Carlton complete Chris Yarran deal 30 minutes before deadline

A GAME of cat and mouse forced Richmond to wait until the final 30 minutes of the trade period to secure a deal for Chris Yarran.

Carlton knew it would send Yarran to Punt Rd for pick 19 but wanted to complete a swag of other trades before releasing him.

The Blues on Thursday landed pick 11 in the draft in a swap with the Western Bulldogs for selections 20 and 21 and tried, but failed, to recruit Greater Western Sydney’s Adam Tomlinson.

Yarran was off-loaded at the death to ensure the Blues weren’t in possession of selection 19 when they were dealing with the Dogs.

Stephen Silvagni’s daring list overhaul has handed Carlton four picks inside the top 20 for the first time in the club’s history — 1, 8, 11 and 19.

As late as Wednesday night the Blues were demanding Richmond surrender pick 12 to get its hands on Yarran.

Richmond football boss Dan Richardson admitted to frustration at the standoff.

“We were really confident he’d always end up at Tigerland, but things dragged on a little bit longer than we would have liked,” Richardson said.

“I lost a little bit more hair, not that I had much more to lose — but in the end it’s a good result for the club and I can tell you Chris is pumped to be a Tiger player.

“When the news came through he was really excited.”

Richardson said Yarran had been recruited to play as a rebounding defender, rather than a forward.

“I think that’s his preferred position and where he plays his best footy ... but he’s also capable as a small forward as well,” Richardson said.

“Dimma (coach Damien Hardwick) and the coaches will make that call ... but primarily the decision has been around another rebounding defender to help our run from half-back and complement Bachar (Houli) who probably plays a bit of a lone hand in that regard.”

Yarran’s manager, Paul Connors, said the 119-game Blues playmaker — pick 6 in the 2008 draft — was excited at the prospect of reigniting his career at Punt Rd.

“I was always confident that there was a mutual understanding that it was best for both parties to part ways,” Connors said.

“He’s 24, already back in training and looking forward to working with Damien Hardwick and Mark Williams and being a part of the Richmond footy club.”

Yarran has signed a three-year deal and joins Greater Western Sydney hard nut Jacob Townsend as Richmond’s only two acquisitions across the trade period.

Richmond tried to get Carlton a better pick for Chris Yarran

Richmond football manager Dan Richardson said despite some apprehension he did not lose belief the deal would be done.

"You're always a bit nervous when it gets to half an hour before the deadline … but we were fairly confident that in the end it would work out," Richardson said.

"We always thought pick 19 was a fair deal for both parties. Obviously we worked hard all week to get something a bit lower than that, but in the end that's what we had and it's great that Carlton accepted the pick."

Richardson confirmed pick 12 "was never on the table".

He thought Yarran could play at either end of the ground. "That's obviously up to [coach Damien Hardwick] and the coaching staff, but more than likely as a rebounding defender, but we're obviously well aware he's got some goalkicking ability as well."

Yarran had disciplinary issues at the Blues and was twice dropped this year to the VFL.

"I think a fresh start is what he was after," Richardson said.

Hey Tiffany, stick to commenting on laundry and kitchen issues.  Stupid comment.
