One side dominates a game for a period but because of poor kicking they don't put the other side away, then the opposition comes back and makes them pay. It happened to GWS last week and this time it was Richmond's turn. Forget Richmond's inexcusable blunders in the last 10 minutes, the Tigers' loss to Collingwood on Friday night was because they kicked terribly to teammates for most of the night and woefully at the goals. The Tigers dominated the second quarter but managed only 1.6. They should have been up by at least three goals at the long break, not five points, and Collingwood knew it.
When Jack Riewoldt kicked a goal in the 21st minute of the last quarter to put Richmond ahead by 17 points, the Pies sensed the moment and seized control while the Tigers stopped running and thinking. No Collingwood player was bigger when it counted than Alex Fasolo, who stood up for two late majors to reach six for the game, but Adam Treloar was almost his equal. Booed throughout by Tigers fans who ate up the media storm surrounding his decision to move from GWS to the Pies, Treloar had three inside-50s in the fourth term as they ran over the top of Richmond in an ugly, error-riddled game. Whatever injury excuses Tigers fans might like to come up with, the fact is these types of games are won by top-four teams, and it looks increasingly like Richmond are not one of those.
