Lack of skill Richmond’s eternal problem: ConnollyJustin Talent

11 Apr 2016Richmond’s poor use of the footy in yesterday’s loss to Adelaide is a sign that the Tigers’ lack of ball skills continues to be a major problem, says Rohan Connolly.
The Age footy writer says that Adelaide’s performance displayed just how far off the Tigers are to a team with elite disposal.
“Damien Hardwick said in the press conference that they got killed by their lack of skill and I think that is Richmond’s eternal problem,” Connolly said on SEN radio.
“Their skills compared to an Adelaide just aren’t up to par. They dominated that game early and just continually turned the ball going forward.
“Even in the third term they kicked three goals in a row at late in the second quarter and you thought they were a chance…they dominated the first half of the third quarter, eleven inside 50s to six in the first 18 minutes of the quarter. They kicked 1.5, Adelaide went in six times for four goals.”
However he also believes that the Crows showed yesterday that they could be premiership contenders this season.
“I thought Adelaide were absolutely sensational yesterday against the Tigers. Not only are they a definite top four show, they could do a bit better than that I reckon. They’re tough but they’re skilled,” said Connolly
“They just have an explosiveness about them. Obviously up forward they probably have one of the best forward setups in the competition at the moment but they’ve got it all over the ground. They’ve replaced Dangerfield without missing a beat in midfield.”
Scott Lucas agreed with Connolly’s thoughts on the Tigers, and added that Richmond’s current game plan does not work well enough when teams apply great amounts of pressure on the ball user.
“They’re at a point where the game they play doesn’t stack up to teams that apply great pressure. A lot of poor turnovers and also their structure around the footy. Smacked up around the clearances.
“If your ball use is not elite and you’re no good in and around the contest you’re going to get your pants pulled down.”
