AFL power dressing: which footy guernseys have the most visual impact?

HOW THE EXPERTS RATE THE AFL JUMPERS

GENE BAWDEN, HEAD OF DESIGN, MONASH UNIVERSITY

What works:

Collingwood - classic black and white and largely unaltered for decades

Carlton - complex but iconic type treatment to logo: another long life design

Hawthorn - while the colours remind me of drab 1970s kitchens, the contrasting stripes and the colours are unmistakable and communicate because of it

Melbourne - classic V, powerful colour combination

Geelong - horizontal stripes. Strong but less elongated than the vertical versions

Western Bulldogs - reverted back to the 1950s horizontal stripes, maybe to rekindle the great grand final? Seems to be working for them so far

Essendon - powerful red on black sash

Richmond - the yellow is not quite as strong as the red

North Melbourne - more stripes

Fremantle Dockers - highly visible chevron design

Port Adelaide - another chevron

St Kilda - I’m a fan of the jumper, but the logo needs updating

Sydney Swans - the opera house icon imposed over the old South Melbourne V was a clever transition that seems to have served them well with little need to change

Adelaide Crows - strong stripe design, but too many

Not so great:

West Coast - garish colour combination and the panels that go under the arms look like a bolero jacket

Giants - way too corporate

Brisbane Lions - terrible colour combination with a toothless smiling lion

Gold Coast Suns - yellow and red are the colours of fast food and the logo looks like a car brand

---------------------------------------------------------------

JOHN SALVADO, AAP DEPUTY SPORTS EDITOR

Hard to split the top ones but here goes.

1. Carlton

2. Richmond - yellow sash on black jumper is a ripper

3. Geelong - hoops are very old school and all the better for it

4. Port Adelaide

5. Collingwood

6. Melbourne

7. Fremantle

8. Essendon

9. St Kilda

10. North Melbourne

11. Western Bulldogs

12. Adelaide

13. Brisbane

14. West Coast

15. Hawthorn - I love stripes, but brown and gold is just an awful combination

16. Sydney - too tricky, unlike the simple old South Melbourne jumper

17. GWS

18. Gold Coast

----------------------------------------

BRENT COKER, CONSUMER PSYCHOLOGIST, UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE

Top five

1. Collingwood - highly distinctive, and immediate association with a bird known for its adaptability and raucousness. Vertical stripes also make objects look taller, which is a strong attribute for players in this game

2. Essendon - Strong colour combination combined in a unique way. Black suggests power, red suggests energy. A sash suggests winner

3. Sydney Swans - red and white are one of the strongest contrasts on the colour wheel. White suggests stealth, and red suggests energy

4. Gold Coast Suns - orange and red has strong obvious associations with their origin. Energetic

5 West Coast Eagles - blue and gold are colours usually favoured by corporate service organisations (lawyers, etc.) but the eagle logo is simple, strong, and means business

Bottom five

Hawthorn - although gold suggests power, matched with brown the associations disappear. Brown suggests slow and dependable, not very exciting

Carlton - muddied logo and plain corporate colour

Brisbane Lions - clichéd logo, and dull unmatched colour combination

The Western Bulldogs and Carlton colours don’t work for consumer psychologist Brent Coker. Picture: Scott Barbour/AFL Media/Getty Images
Western Bulldogs - corporate blue with a couple of stripes. Indistinct with no useful associations or obvious meaning

North Melbourne - corporate blue and white, looking too much like Collingwood, which owns the horizontal stripes look
