Grimes withdrawal rattles Richmond

Herald-Sun
4 June 2016

RICHMOND’s plans were sent into turmoil just moments before the first bounce on Friday night with defender Dylan Grimes injuring his hamstring in the warm-up.

It meant the Tigers began the game with three fit men on the bench as Troy Chaplin frantically warmed up in the rooms.

Grimes missed four weeks in two blocks due to hamstring issues in 2015 and has a long history of soft tissue troubles stretching back to 2012 when he travelled to Germany for treatment.

He also missed several games earlier this year after injuring his right hamstring against Collingwood in Round 2.

Chaplin eventually took the field 13 minutes into the contest, with Grimes cutting a forlorn figure in a tracksuit behind closed doors.

AFL rules allow a team to make a change up until the first bounce of a game, so long as you notify the opposition, the match manager and the replacement comes from the emergency list.

Last year St Kilda made two equally late changes, first with Paddy McCartin replacing Nick Riewoldt against Collingwood and then with Eli Templeton coming in for Leigh Montagna against Adelaide.

On both occasions the Saints were issued with ‘please explains’ from the AFL but nothing more.

Richmond’s woes continued shortly after with Steve Morris going down injured with a right knee problem and stretchered off.
