Which 5 Tigers are the key to us taking the next step this year?

Next step being say a few more wins or at least being (more) competitive with the sides that gave us a touch up last year such as the Saints and Crows.

Your guys and gals thoughts.

 - Schultz
 - Newman
 - Tuck
 - Hall
 - Hyde

My 2c. A quick reasoning:

Schultz is vital for the long term future of Richmond football club. Best we can hope for is he will become a A-Grade CHF and dominate ala Brown/Hall for the next decade. For the less optmistic of us he should be able to hold down a FF or CHB and make the postion his own next year and for the long term. If not, If Jay doesn't make it at least as a' solid' KPP or tall man stocks are going to really be exposed as we try and build a young future core.

Newman has to take the next step. Hard, fast, skills - is a fine player, amousnt our best. Needs to move out of the backpocket and try to evolve from a fringe player to a quailty midfeidler/HBF who is amousnt our best week in/week out and one of the first on the team sheet.

Tuck Needs to repeat 2005. Wonderful year from Shane - a cult hero. However, much harder to be a gem when people know who you are, watch vids on you and give you the odd tag/pay attention to you. Was it a one off or will Tuck be quailty for the RFC for the next 10 years?

Hall Average utilty? Solid CHB. Youngsters develop at different rates and 2005 saw Rayman finally come somewhat good. Needs to take the next step to force his way into our side and find a postions or he is in dangour of being forever just an average fringe type.

Hyde Grunt, hunger, pace. Hyde is another who we need to take the next step from a B/C grade footballer to a quailty top 10 player at this club. Must try to inrpove to a tagging midfeilder who wins his own ball taking over from Chaffey ie. Corns/Kirk.

As you can see I feel if we want to grow it'll have to come from the 20-25yoa age group. I think people overrate what abilty the Tambling, Polo, Hughes types will be able to offer us untill they have another pre-season or 2 under there belt.

Also a huge year for the 3rd year crop: Raines, Jackson, Roach, Moore etc.

not in order but

1/ shulz - we need a dominant chb
2/ hall - a dominant chb needs a sidekick to work with , that is hall
3/ sugar - we need sugar to start really dominating , starting forward thrusts from hbf
4/ coglan - to reagin his jack d medal form and skill level, after a reasonalle first season back from injury , he should be in prime condition now
5/ brown - we need brown to be that extra special goal kicker up fwd and kick 60+, batman needs robin, and we hope browns leg gives him no trouble at all. if say browns leg isnt gonna hold up, we need another small fwd to kick 60+ thus its up to petts, bling, lids or rodan, lets hope brown comes up trumps

Schulz - because we need him to hold down CHB

Brown - because he is our best player even coming back from injury. If we can get 40-50 goals from him we'll give the 8 a shake

Tuck - will interesting how he goes with the extra protection

Deledio - to break packs open and get around the extra attention

Coughlan - full pre-season this time round must mean he'll be able to kick over the jam jar in 2006  ;D. sriously will be better for a unrestricted pre-season

Great topic.

In order

1) Schulz - We need a big strong CHF or CHB to help out either Richo and Gaspar.  If he can dominate up forward it will also give Simmons a chance to play full time in the ruck where he is much more effective.  Big year for Schulz.

2) Hartigan - He was really showing signs early last year especially a couple of games before he did his hammy.  His attack and aggression from defence is really needed and it will also give Terry a further option of moving the consistent and reliable Newman into his midfield rotation.

3) Rodan - Was dominating last pre-season and looked to set the world on fire as he took Terry's game plan like a duck to water.  Remember he kicked 7 goals in a intra-club match and was by far the best.  Did his knee a few weeks later.  If he can regain that form it will give Terry another option in his midfield rotation, one that can break lines and kick goals, something we were desperately missing last year.

4) Hyde - Was in our best 2 or 3 before the bang to the head.  Was in everything early, not only hitting the ball and the man hard, but also creating.  Took alot of pressure off Coughlan Tuck and Jonson and these players felt the pinch after Hydes concussion.  If he can find that form again and not be affected by the head clash then Hyde will make a big difference to our team.

5) Raines - I'm pretty confident this kid has got it but for some reason Terry doesn't seem to be a big fan and won't give him enough game time.  Hopefully this will change this year.  I like Raines's ability to win his own ball, stand up in a tackle and deliver long and accurately to the forward line.  He has the body now, all he needs is an extended opportunity.

PS haven't included any of the kids from the past 2 drafts as I don't think you gain core improvement from them.  It's the fringe players who've been around 3-4 years that really need to come on and make a difference.
Does anyone have half an idea on anything?

Mark Coughlan - Needs to improve on last year and should with a full pre season under his belt
Brent Hartigan - Needs to hold down the back pocket, releasing Newman into the midfield or less defensive HBF
Jay Schulz - Wether in be in the forward line or back line needs to cement a spot in the starting 18
Andrew Krakouer - Needs to kick more goals as a forward or get more ball in the midfield
Kayne Pettifer - Will benifit from Browny being back and taking the best small/medium defender of him, expect him to kick more goals

Backs: Newman   Gaspar   Kellaway

Half Backs: Bowden   Shultz   Johnson

Centre Line: Pettifer    Coughlan   Deledio

Half Forwards: Brown   P Bowden   Krakour

Forwards: Tambling   Richo   Stafford

Rucks: Simmonds        Tuck         Hyde

I/C   Knobel   Rodan
   Thursty   Foley

This I think might be close to our starting line up in Round 1, It's a pretty experienced side but having said that there is only about 9  in it who's positions would be iron clad. They'd be Tuck, Coughlan, Gaspar, Richo, Brown, Bowden ,Johnson, Deledio and Simmonds.

There's also quite a few kids I have left out who one might think could be in the side, People like Raines, Roach, Meyer, Polo, Hartigan, Jackson and Hall. This is just an indication of how tough it's getting to pick a side that we want on the park. It was tough to leave out Raines, Hartigan and Jackson but someone in the end has to be left out.

As to the original question to this thread, which 5 have to stand up this year these 5 are:

Shultz: Hall is all over him for his spot at CHB which is really good because if we have problems at CHF then Shultz can go forward and Hall can cover CHB. This has to be Shultz's comming out year he is super important to us.

Krakour: We have lots of little guys who can take over from Krakour, he's good in patches and one of our best tacklers, he should be kicking alot more goals and having more of a presence in games, Tambling, Rodan and Jon are his dangers.

Rodan: Rodan is in the same boat as Krakour only Rodan's boat has a bigger hole in it, lots of guys that can take his place. It was a shame Rodan suffered the knee injury last year as by all reports he was flying and in great form and because of that injury didn't get to show anybody in the season proper that he was or is going to be a major asset for our club going forward. Personally I hope he rips there stuffen hearts out this season.

Hyde: Hyde has got to show that he can get back in the saddle. Started well last year and then crashed after the injury, he needs to step up or get out of the way for Foley, Rodan, Roach or Polo

Newman: Has to do more, had a fairly quite year last year and only got into the Australian side because of one D Frawley. Had a good moment in the series that was blown out of all proportions by the media. Probably will be given a chance in the midfeild this year, he better take it.

If these 5 above have comming out years this year and our usuall producers continue to fire we will make the finals this year.

In no particular order:

1. Hyde - finally found that belief in himself in Wallace's run and carry gameplan. Needs to continue in 2006 where he left off prior to the headclash and cement himself as one of our regular ballwinning midfielders. Although Cambo was used sparingly last year they'll still be a bit of void due to his retirement.

2. Krakouer - Needs to become a more consistent player not only from game to game but within each game and reduce the number and length of spells where he is quiet. When on he is a goalkicking midfielder/forward.

3. Schulz - As others have mentioned we need as strong CHB. If we can also use him forward then that will give Wallace extra flexability with our structure.

4. Hartigan - We need someone to nullify opposition small forward. Newman is more rebounding defender rather than a nullifier.

5. Simmonds - Had a mixed year last year before some good games towards the end as the weight came off. Looks more agile at training so hope he can take that into the real stuff as a mobile ruckman who can run over the ground and link up as a free man when we have the ball.

for us to improve we need the 4 young recruits- JON, Hughes, Casserley, White to all play games and give the supporters more hope for the future. Meyer needs to play some more games, Polo needs to debut, and if McGuane can show something...then there is room for improvement. I say this because I dont believe there is enough improvement in the list to get us in the eight this year with our hard draw.

We need Tuck to repeat last year, Cogs to be back to his best, Richo not to lose his head and Browny to kick goals.

And hope like hell the backline doesnt crumble!

Brown – In an even list, there shouldn’t be so much emphasis on one player, but he is a must if we are to go the next step.  Things need to go reasonably smoothly for him, or our chances aren’t anywhere near as assured as they could be with him near his best.

Simmonds – KPP should be able to bring smaller teammates into the game, or even make life a bit easier for them.  At times last season, he had bursts where he made his presence felt and if he could develop some consistency in his ‘good’ football that would have a positive effect on the rest of the team.  A pre season where he’s had better preparation for the role he will play should help his consistency and give him confidence as well.

Krakouer – promises a lot and if he can stay involved in the game for longer stints, then his tackling and goal kicking could prove a real headache for the opposition.

Pettifer – showed he can play.  An area of his game that he could improve, which would help the rest of the team, is his ability to create a contest.  Last season, in games where he really competed for the footy, it just seemed to take the pressure off players down the ground, because the ball wasn’t going back at them as regularly and quickly.  In games when he switched on and got involved in the game, his ability shone through and if he can develop some consistency to his game that will take some pressure off others around him.

P. Bowden – Not sure why, but we must have got him for a reason.  I couldn’t be any more logical than that. :nope
