Combine results, day one: Father-son prospect Jarman the early standout

Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
October 8, 2016

FATHER-son prospect Ben Jarman is the early standout at the NAB AFL Draft Combine, finishing in the top 10 for all of the skills testing.

The South Australian midfielder, who can join Adelaide and Hawthorn as a father-son pick given his dad Darren's career at both clubs, was one of three joint winners in the clean hands test on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.

Alongside classy midfielder Oliver Florent and defender Ryan Garthwaite, Jarman scored 28 of a possible 30 points in the clean hands exercise, which sees prospects having to gather the ball at ground level before shooting off handballs at different distances.

Jarman, who told AFL.com.au this week he was undecided about which club he would nominate as his preferred home at next month's draft, was also in the top performers in the kicking test.

Rangey Oakleigh Chargers defender Jordan Ridley, who scored 27 out of a possible 30 points, took out that event. Medium defender Isaac Cumming was also impressive in this test, recording 26 points to be outright second.

Cumming is another Greater Western Sydney academy prospect having played with the Giants in the NEAFL, while Ridley's versatility and athleticism has won admirers as a possible top-30 pick.

West Australian midfielder Sam Powell-Pepper was the only player to convert all of his five shots in the goalkicking test to record a perfect score.

Possible top-10 pick Tim English showed his skills for a 204cm ruckman by being one of eight players to kick four goals and a behind, while Jarman kicked four of his five shots and didn't score on the other.

The skills tests followed a long day for the attending players at the combine on Friday, which featured interviews with clubs from early in the morning until dinner time.

Athletic testing begins on Saturday with the jumping, sprints and agility tests before the beep test in the afternoon.

Combine results, day two: First-round prospects star in beep test

Callum Twomey
afl.com.au

THREE possible first-round picks shared top place in the beep test in a busy day three of testing at the NAB AFL Draft Combine.

Victorians Jarrod Berry and Oliver Florent, and West Australian key defender Griffin Logue all reached level 15.1 in the shuttle run, which was the final event of a jam-packed Saturday at Etihad Stadium.

Berry's performance was another reminder of the 2015 All Australian's great athleticism, while Florent's effort showed he can match his pace and class with a strong endurance base.

Logue's performance was perhaps most impressive, with the athletic key back pushing himself to exhaustion in his final run of the afternoon. Some recruiters see him as a possible top-20 pick given his size and ability to move around the ground.

Jacob Allison was another player to remind people of his excellent athletic profile, running 2.87sec to take out the 20-metre sprint test ahead of Ben Ainsworth (2.90) and Josh Rotham (2.92).

Ainsworth again placed in the top group of performers for the agility test, which was won by North Ballarat prospect Tom Williamson. The skillful medium defender recorded a time of 8.15sec.

The jumps tests were also completed under the watchful eyes of clubs at Etihad Stadium, with Jordan Gallucci's leap of 89cm in the standing vertical jump breaking the all-time record.

The speedy midfielder's background in volleyball makes him a vibrant prospect and his jump overtook the record held by American Marvin Baynham (88cm in 2014).

Possible No.1 pick Andrew McGrath led the way in the running vertical jump off the left foot with a leap of 96cm, while Logue was best on the right side with a lift of 91cm.

The combine concludes with the 3km time trial on Sunday before the attending prospects have another set of interviews with clubs.

Combine results, day three: Jarrod Berry caps strong combine

Callum Twomey
afl.com.au
October 9, 2016 5:32 PM

JARROD Berry has capped a strong NAB AFL Draft Combine by taking out the 3km time trial with an impressive run.

The Vic Country captain closed out the four-day screening at Etihad Stadium by running 9min 46sec in the gruelling test, which places him in the top 10 runs in combine history.

It followed excellent athletic results for the 18-year-old across the combine, including being a joint winner of the beep test by reaching level 15.1.

The attacking half-back/midfielder also finished in the top 10 for the repeat sprints, clean hands and kicking tests, reminding recruiters of his athleticism.

Berry beat out Rebels teammate Tom Williamson (9:50), midfielder Dylan Clarke (9:52) and key defender Griffin Logue (9:58) in the time trial, after Logue overcame stiff competition from key forward Josh Battle to win the talls group.

"It was a good 'Josh Battle', if you want to say it like that," Logue said to laughs after the run.

"We said we'd go out together and he just shot out from the start and I was worried I wasn’t going to catch him, but I'm happy to draw him in in the end.

"I adjusted my stride length and kept striding out a bit more and more. But I got to the third lap and (Ryan) Garthwaite came and went past me and I thought it might be a bit tough, but I just dug in and gave it my all and I was happy with the result."

Berry's performance in the final event of the combine was given extra weight given his big day of testing on Saturday, which included finishing fourth overall in the repeat sprints.

Vic Metro co-captain Jordan Gallucci took the honours in that event, running a total of 24.36 seconds ahead of No.1 pick contender Andrew McGrath (24.44 seconds).

Repeat sprint total (six x 30metre sprints)
Jordan Gallucci (24.36 sec)
Andrew McGrath (24.44)
Bailey Morrish (24.83)
Jarrod Berry (24.99)
Ben Ainsworth (25.01)
Kym LeBois (25.08)
Griffin Logue (25.09)
Shai Bolton (25.10)
Myles Poholke (25.20)
Jacob Allison (25.30)

3km time trial

Jarrod Berry (9:46 minutes)
Tom Williamson (9:50)
Dylan Clarke (9:52)
*Mark O'Connor (9:56)

Forgot I said this. Hey HRT can you confirm if he's interested or does the same rule apply to draftees?

Haha, sure can, got a little more run in his legs than Leigh!
If he can get his fitness up I can see him playing big stints in the midfield as well.
Just back on Leigh he's returning back to Sorrento this season after a disappointing in the peninsula league last year ;)

Myles kicking is meant to be a little suspect no? Saw he got a good score in the clean hands which doesn't surprise me though
Yeah I heard that, surprised he didn't stick it out a little longer. I guess it was just for the money :shh
