Match report: Tigers gain some revenge with a tight win over Pies

RICHMOND has started its season with back-to-back wins, beating Collingwood 14.15 (99) to 11.14 (80) in a tight and hard contest at the MCG on Thursday night.

The first half was dotted with skill errors and a seeming inability by both teams to kick goals from set shots, with Chris Mayne managing the first for the match right on the half-time siren.

When they came out for the third quarter the game cranked up a notch, but the Magpies still had trouble finishing and the Tigers took a seven-point lead into the final break.

Despite facing a 20-point deficit inside the last 10 minutes Collingwood refused to lie down and kept coming at Richmond, but the Tigers showed nerves of steel in the last few minutes to hold on for the win.

I know it's a weeknight but 58k is an ordinary crowd for a Richmond vs Collingwood game. From the clips of the crowd it looked as if the Richmond end was pretty full but the Collingwood end was sparse. Pies supporters must have seen the writing on the wall and have given up on the season already  ;D.

''Twas bloody cold MT, so cold I was cramping up in the 4th quarter.

Most of the night I wished I stayed on the couch under a doona especially the skill level of both teams so bad. I'm glad we won because when I'm inevitably sick I can cough over all the filth and cheats supporters.
The club that keeps giving.

Tigers make wasteful Magpies pay

GLENN McFARLANE,
Herald Sun

COACHING AFL teams might as well come with a health warning along with the hefty contract so often not worth the paper it is printed on.

If you ever needed a reminder, just imagine living out the wild mood swings so publicly experienced by Nathan Buckley and his counterpart Damien Hardwick in Thursday night’s mistake-ridden Collingwood-Richmond clash.

It was enough to make any neutral observer giddy with the ever-changing pendulum of emotions.

A high one moment followed by high blood pressure the next. Hardwick felt it one minute; Buckley the next.

It was one of those sort of games, and one suspects on the comedy of errors and poor execution, it is going to be one of those seasons for both clubs and both coaches.

In a game billed as a litmus test for which of the coaches was going to be under the most pressure leading into week three of crucial seasons for both, and a test of the respective lists that Adam Treloar insisted in November 2015 favoured the Magpies, the Tigers turned around a poor first half to grind out a 19-point victory.

So on that measure, it is a fair bet to suggest Hardwick will sleep a little sounder than Buckley. But as each of them sifts through the vision of the match, let’s hope they both have a nice glass of red to soothe some of the more frustrating moments.

Having said that, the Tigers are 2-0 to start the season for only the third time since 1995. The last time they did it was in 2013, the year when a Hardwick team first played finals.

And on the flip side, the Magpies are 0-2 for the first time since Buckley was skipper of the club way back in 2005, and with a tough month to come, he needs things to change — by his own admission — if he is to keep his job.

It was Hardwick who appeared to feel the heat early, as the Magpies seemed to have the best of the play in the first half. If Collingwood had been more polished, it might have been a different story.

For almost 25 minutes of the second term the Magpies shot themselves in the foot. They had 14 of the first 18 of the inside 50s of the second quarter, and for a time dominated general play, but the reward was five miserable behinds and two out of bounds shots.

Sitting forlornly in the box, Buckley turned away for a period before late goals to Darcy Moore and Chris Mayne sent the Magpies in the main break leading by 10 points.

And when Jesse White pushed the margin out to 16 points early in the third term, it looked as if Collingwood was going to push clear.

But it wasn’t to be. Few footballers have used the ball as exquisitely as Nathan Buckley did in his prime at Collingwood, but sadly that he hasn’t yet been able to translate that to his players.

The field kicking and shooting for goal was so poor.

The crunch point for Buckley came when Mayne laid a big tackle on Alex Rance in the third term, winning the free kick, before spraying the ball inexplicably when shooting for goal.

The coach banged his hand in the coaches’ box seemingly so frustrated that he was oblivious to the pain it caused.

As Richmond finished off Collingwood with five goals in the last term, thanks to Trent Cotchin’s dominance and two last-term goals from Dustin Martin, another former Magpie great-turned-coach Tony Shaw clearly felt for Buckley.

Shaw summed it up perfectly when he tweeted: “Don’t blame Bucks. Half of these players’ skill faults are nearly uncoachable.”

Unfortunately with games against Sydney, St Kilda, a resurgent Essendon and Geelong to come in the next month, it ain’t looking pretty for the club — or the coach.

Nathan Buckley could only lash out in the coaches box in frustration as Collingwood remained winless, this time their poor goal kicking to blame for a 19-point loss to Richmond on Thursday night.

Where the Magpies' woes had been their sloppy disposal when heading into attacking 50 in a loss to the Western Bulldogs last week, they were left to lament their woeful conversion rate on this occasion at the MCG, ensuring a week of intense public scrutiny.

Fighting to retain his job, Buckley must now find a way for the Pies to regain their groove, with finals contenders Sydney (SCG) on Friday night, St Kilda (Etihad Stadium), Essendon (MCG) and Geelong (MCG) to come over the next month. The Pies led by 10 points at half-time but that would have been far more had they not botched a handful of opportunities in front of goal.

Darcy Moore, Jesse White, James Aish, Alex Fasolo and Adam Treloar would all miss shots they would be expected to convert, with even skipper Scott Pendlebury, admittedly on his right foot, spraying a running shot over the boundary.

There would be more frustration in the third term, none more obvious than when recruit Chris Mayne missed from about 20m out in front of goal, after the former Docker – who has had the yips in recent years – had done the hard work by successfully tackling Alex Rance. It was a telling miss. Fasolo, who had a dirty night, would later botch a set shot from 35m. This was enough to make any coach slip into a rage, and Buckley's feelings were clear when he swiped at his desk in anger.

After an arm-wrestle in the first half, the Tigers made their run from late in the third term, incidentally after key forward-ruckman Ben Griffiths was helped from the field after landing heavily in a marking contest on the wing. He was clearly dazed and did not return.

Trailing by a game-high 17 points, the Tigers – despite the best efforts of indefatigable Pies ruckman Brodie Grundy – would respond to lead by seven points at the final change. The Tigers' tackling pressure, as was the case against Carlton a week earlier, was instrumental in their comeback, as they outworked their opponents.

Dustin Martin may not have been as brilliant as he was against the Blues but he played a key role, whether that be through the midfield or up forward. His strong mark and successful snap with less than six minutes remaining would ice the win.

Adam Treloar found plenty of the ball for the Pies, so, too, did Trent Cotchin, who was brilliant. He would finish with 26 disposals, two goals, seven clearances and seven tackles. Dion Prestia was also busy with 24 disposals but his kicking percentage was poor. The Pies  showed plenty of fight in the final term, with Will Hoskin-Elliott contributing three goals, but the Tigers responded in fine style.

"Collingwood are a fantastic side .. it's just how you turn that momentum back your way. There were some fantastic efforts," Cotchin said.

Buckley said he had been worried the Pies would struggle to run out the game after a taxing clash against the Bulldogs.

"We thought that we would struggle for legs. We felt like we really rolled out of the Bulldogs' game and looked after the players as well as we possibly could, introduced some fresh legs in Aish and (Tim) Broomhead, went a bit smaller but, in the end, we weren't able to maintain the rage for long enough," he said.
