Richmond coach Damien Hardwick doesn’t want a shootout against attacking Adelaide Crows

RICHMOND does not want to engage top-of-the-ladder Adelaide in a shootout when the AFL’s No.1 attack meets the league’s stingiest defence on Sunday.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick has been thrilled with his backline’s ability to “stem the flow” at stages this season, including during Melbourne’s first-quarter dominance on Anzac Eve.

The Crows are averaging a staggering 133 points per game and while Richmond is one of five teams also averaging three figures, it wants a “dour” affair when the undefeated clubs face off.

Adelaide has slotted 47 goals in the past fortnight and also led the AFL for scoring in 2016.

“We wouldn’t be hoping for a shootout. We’ve got to stop them to win,” Hardwick said today.

The Crows are the AFL’s No.1 club for offensive ball movement and Hardwick said denying halfback dashers Rory Laird, Brodie Smith and midfield jets Rory Atkins and Rory Sloane space was crucial.

“If you allow them to play with speed they’ll hurt you. So we’ve got to slow them down,” Hardwick said.

The Tigers are 5-0 for the first time since 1995 while the Crows have been crunched into premiership favouritism, along with GWS.

Richmond poured over vision of Andy Otten this morning and believed Daniel Talia trained this week and could play.

The All-Australian defender hurt his hamstring last week and the Crows would probably turn to Kyle Hartigan to stop superstar Jack Riewoldt if Talia does not come up.

“Defensively we’ve got to be on our game, because that’s where it’ll be won or lost,” Hardwick said.

“It’s going to be a groundball battle. I think we’re AFL No.1 and they’re No.2.”

Hardwick said Brownlow Medal fancy Dustin Martin “warmed” into last week’s win after barely training due to groin soreness, but had recovered well.

But ruckman Shaun Hampson has suffered a setback with his back injury and has been sent offsite to add pilates to his rehabilitation program.

Hardwick praised Toby Nankervis’s impact around the ground as the physical ruckman firms as the best recruit of the season.

The Tigers wanted Nankervis, 22, in the 2013 draft and were armed with pick 50, but Sydney swooped at No.33.

But they traded pick 46 for him last year, beating premier Western Bulldogs to his signature.

“His ability to compete around the ground, it’s like having another midfielder in there,” Hardwick said.

“He’s just one of those players that competes really hard.”

Hardwick liked Daniel Rioli’s ability to lift teammates after the emerging star helped trigger Richmond’s stirring comeback win against the Dees.

“He’s finding his way. His impact on the game like his cousin (Cyril) in a way, probably only needs 12 touches to have a significant impact.

“He’s got a propensity to make players around him better, just through his touch.”

Hardwick wants dour struggle against Crows

By AAP+

Damien Hardwick is warning Richmond to play to their strengths and avoid a shootout in their AFL match of the round against Adelaide.

Sunday’s blockbuster at Adelaide Oval features the Crows, the AFL’s highest-scoring team, against the Tigers, who boast the most miserly defence after five rounds.

Along with Geelong, they are the AFL’s only unbeaten teams.

Adelaide have scored the most by a significant margin and that puts them top on percentage.

While the Tigers have also averaged more than 100 points per game – a healthy output – more significantly they have the AFL’s best defensive record.

“We wouldn’t be hoping for a shootout,” Hardwick said.

“We’re going over there to win, don’t get me wrong, but we have to stop them to win.

“Ideally we probably want the game to be more of a dour-type affair, if we can.”

Adelaide will start warm favourites, but Hardwick said his team will attack the challenge with confidence.

“Our boys are up for it, they’re excited about a really high-quality side,” he said.

“We give ourselves every chance.”

Richmond captain Trent Cotchin did not train on Friday, but is expected to play.

Hardwick added fellow star midfielder Dustin Martin was continuing to improve after nursing a groin problem through the Anzac eve win over Melbourne.

One of the biggest challenges for the Tigers will be Crows excitement machine Eddie Betts, who leads the AFL goalkicking.

Hardwick said they have players who match up well on the small forward, but acknowledged the dangers that Betts poses.

“He just takes a minute to get off the leash and kick a lot of goals, very quickly,” Hardwick said.

“We’ll have plans in place for when he’s deep and up the ground, because he’s very clever around stoppages as well.

“But his ability to win one-on-one contests is probably what concerns us most.

“If the ball’s in his hands, I’m worried.”

At the other end of the ground, young Tigers small forwards Daniel Rioli, Jason Costagna and Dan Butler are also making their mark.

“What I like about how he plays, he has a propensity to make players around him better, just through his touch,” Hardwick said of Rioli.

“He’s one of those guys that you probably have to encourage to be a little bit more selfish at stages, instead of … providing opportunities to others.

“I’d rather have him that way than the opposite.”

While the Tigers have a healthy list, ruck-forward Ben Griffiths is out indefinitely because of concussion.

Hardwick also revealed that ruckman Shaun Hampson suffered another setback last week as he struggles to overcome a long-term back injury.

Just play hard contested footy, if we match them in the clinches we have a chance, if not, not. Simple, lets not change our footy philosophy and lose this before a ball is bounced

  • You have to think anyway, so why not think big? DT
If we play chip and stop footy, forget it.
Play fast, play on, kick long, man up.
