lol

Will Minson will miss round 1 so with Darcy not there either we should have the advantage talls wise. Leaves on Peter Street to ruck against Simmonds, Knobel, Stafford or Patto depending on who we go with.

Knobel and Staff to miss

Tigers go into first game without their key big man
By Jake Niall
The Age
March 28, 2006

RICHMOND will have a threadbare ruck division in round one after No. 1 ruckman Trent Knobel last weekend suffered a hairline fracture to his fibula.

With Greg Stafford recovering from a calf injury and also unavailable for the first game, forward/ruck Troy Simmonds will have to carry the load, with support only from 20-year-old Adam Pattison, who has played just two senior games.

Knobel fractured his fibula playing for Coburg against North Ballarat, but Richmond football director Greg Miller said the player might only miss one game.

Jay Schulz, who had some hamstring tightness, trained well yesterday and will be fine for Friday night's game. Schulz has been earmarked for a key defensive position this year, Richmond having sufficient faith to sign him to a two-year contract extension last week.

The Tigers' opponent, the Western Bulldogs, will also be without two of their three frontline ruckmen. Will Minson's broken hand means that Peter Street will be in the same position as Simmonds, as the sole seasoned ruckman.

So much for being told he was fine  ::). Knobel will be out for a few weeks if he has hairline fracture. Losing both Knobel and Staff cancels out the advantage we would of have with Minson out for the doggies. We go through the whole preseason virtually injury-free and then cop a couple with a week to go  :scream.

Not too keen seeing Sarge play either if he had hamstring tightness  :-\.

They are tipping that Minson is likely to play now :'(

Huge challenge for Simmonds - he could win everyone over in game 1 of the season :lol

Match Preview: Western Bulldogs v Richmond
1:31:33 PM Tue 28 March, 2006
Matt Burgan
Exclusive to afl.com.au

WESTERN BULLDOGS V RICHMOND:

WHERE & WHEN: Telstra Dome, Friday night - 19:40 AEDT

TV & RADIO: Channel 9 (Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Brisbane), ABC, Triple M, 3AW

OUR COVERAGE: Live scores, stats & audio, Game Day News Desk, match replay (24 hour delay)

HEAD TO HEAD: Played 138 - Western Bulldogs 62, Richmond 75, 1 Draw.

LAST TIME: Western Bulldogs 18.11 (119) bt Richmond 16.11 (107)

THE MEDICAL ROOM: Season-ending knee injuries have not been kind to the Bulldogs during the pre-season, as skipper Luke Darcy and youngster Tim Walsh have both succumbed these setbacks. Promising key tall Tom Williams also faces an extensive period on the sidelines, as he has a serious ankle injury and is out indefinitely. Ruckman Will Minson will be out for one to two weeks with a hand injury, while returned Bulldog and 2004 Port Adelaide premiership player Brett Montgomery is set to miss with a calf problem. Tiger veteran Mark Chaffey (groin) and young defender/midfielder Kelvin Moore (hip) are both set to miss the opening round, while teammate Ray Hall (back) faces a fitness test.

THE STORY SO FAR: Before any football was played in 2006, the Bulldogs were firming as one of the teams to watch this year. Will they still be? It will be interesting now that two of its tall timber brigade - skipper Luke Darcy and youngster Tim Walsh - have both gone down with season-ending knee injuries. The Dogs' pre-season form has been indifferent, with just one win coming against St Kilda during the NAB Challenge, after they unexpectedly lost to Melbourne in the opening round of the NAB Cup in Darwin. Can they remain on track to be one of the genuine climbers up the ladder in 2006? Only time will tell. But the Dogs have better depth, maturity and a fine coach that will be integral in the process. Richmond is a difficult team to place in 2006. Will it be a tough year at Punt Rd or will Terry's Tigers be on the rise? There are plenty of mixed views on the yellow and black entering 2006 and an even pre-season - a 2-2 win/loss ratio was recorded during the pre-season - will add further intrigue to the Tigers. One thing is for certain, Wallace will get the best out of his troops.

THE WHITEBOARD: Matthew Richardson has had a field day against the Bulldogs on a number of encounters - he has kicked 10 goals in one match against the Dogs - and this will give no frills, yet highly effective full-back Brian Harris a great opportunity to stem the 'Richo' flow. This is will be one of the key duels in the match and will go a long way to the overall result. Bulldog ruckman Peter Street will have plenty of work to do in the ruck against Richmond pair Troy Simmonds and Greg Stafford, particularly with Darcy and Minson on the sidelines.

THE VERDICT: It's always tough to pick a winner in the opening round of a home-and-away season, but the Bulldogs enter 2006 as a team on the rise, while to a certain extent a question mark hangs over Richmond. Having said that, the loss of some key big men for the Bulldogs - namely Darcy and Minson - will be significant and the Tigers will back themselves all the way. It looms as a genuine 50/50 contest and with a flip of the coin - it's the Dogs - just. Western Bulldogs by 11 points.

Brown adds spice to contest of intrigue
By Lyall Johnson
The Age
March 31, 2006

A MATCH between two clubs with so much recent shared history is always going to have sub-plots, but tonight'smatch between Richmond and the Western Bulldogs will be a many layered beast.

Much of the early attention will be on former Bulldog and now Richmond gun Nathan Brown, who plays his first game after breaking his leg against Melbourne in round 10 last year.

It has been a long road and yesterday Brown did not participate in full training, as he has all summer on days immediately before a match.

Instead, he practised shooting for goals, which is where he was so damaging early last year, averaging 3.3 a game before his injury.

His mate up forward, Matthew Richardson, said the team was looking forward to having him back in the side.

"It was uncertain whether he would make it to round one. A lot of people didn't think he would," Richardson said.

"Probably about eight weeks ago, I reckon Browny really started to come on and once he got a couple of practice matches under his belt, his confidence has grown and obviously he's ready to go. They wouldn't be risking him if he wasn't 100 per cent ready to go."

Then there will be Patrick Bowden, who was traded to Richmond over summer and plays his first game alongside his brother Joel, Richmond's two-time best and fairest, and at the club where their dad, Michael, was a premiership player in the Tigers' halcyon days under Tom Hafey in 1969.

"People who come up against their old side have always got a point to prove and I'm sure Patrick wants to get out there and show them what he can do," Richardson said.

"I think it was a lifelong ambition that they could get together and I know Joel's rapt to have him here."

Richardson said the enthusiasm for the season's start had heightened this year as the players had come to grips with coach Terry Wallace's game plans.

"We've really got a good grasp of what he's after now," he said.

"Twelve months on … we've really got a good understanding of each other now and it's time for us to go out there and do it."

The Bulldogs' barnstorming finish to 2005 prompted many to ink them in for a finals berth but coach Rodney Eade believes tonight's game will show his players how hard living up to that expectation will be.

"We've spoken about the importance of this game against a side that's going to be pretty tough and fairly physical," Eade said.

Five wins from the last six rounds left the Dogs agonisingly short of a finals berth last year, but emboldened Eade's young team.

"It's given the group a sense of belief, that they can compete with the best teams in the competition," he said.

Richmond starts without Trent Knobel, who missed much of the pre-season with a range of injuries, including a hairline fracture of the fibula. Greg Stafford is a late inclusion after doubts about his injured calf.

The Bulldogs have named ruckman Will Minson but he is expected to miss with a broken hand.
