Tigers draftee shines, Dusty flying

Richmond gave a glimpse of just how it might structure up in the ruck this season in an intra-club hit out — and it doesn’t involve Shaun Grigg who is said to be “spewing”.

No.1 ruckman Toby Nankervis started forward in Saturday’s clash at Punt Rd Oval, with understudy Ivan Soldo playing on the same team and taking the first centre-bounce.

Nankervis sprayed an early set shot but kicked a goal later in the 90 minutes of match play, during which he and Soldo rotated between ruck duties and resting forward.

Youngsters Noah Balta and Callum Coleman-Jones shared much of the ruck duties for the other team, along with 195cm defender David Astbury who was surprisingly pushed up into centre-bounce ruck duties at times.

The Tigers know that playing an undersized ruckman like Grigg is no longer a wise move under new AFL rules this season but are yet to settle on their set up.

However, assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said after the intra-club match that if they did play two ruckman it would be Nankervis and Soldo.

YOUNG STARS

While positions in a team which made a preliminary final last year and were premiers in 2017 won’t be easy to come by, Richmond draftees Riley Collier-Dawkins and Jack Ross pushed their cases with impressive showings.

The pair played in the thick of the action in the midfield, at times manned up against superstars Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin, and found plenty of the ball while also using it well.

Selected at pick 20 in last year’s draft, Collier-Dawkins particularly did not look out of place while the big-bodied Ross, selected at pick 43, improved as the match went on.

“I think those two young guys were really good in the contest, it’s just getting used to the pace of the game for young players and also playing an AFL system because they’re two completely different styles of footy what you do in junior footy and what you do in the men’s game,” Leppitsch said.

“They’re going to take a while to adjust to that but I think all-in-all their effort’s terrific and their ball winning ability’s terrific.”

SEASONED STARS

Captain Cotchin looked as sharp as ever in the intra-club hit out, while Martin oozed class as usual.

Veteran Bachar Houli also looked to have wound back the clock, providing plenty of drive off the half-back line along with Jayden Short.

Dropped for finals last year, Brandon Ellis also showed plenty in a new role further up the ground having spend much of his time in recent years in defence.

Ellis started on a wing, spent time onball and was flicked to half-back at times.

“Brandon’s been in the midfield all pre-season and been really good, whether it be inside, on the wing, we know that he can play half-back as well,” Leppitsch said.

“The way footy’s going those flexible players are going to be invaluable.”

Former Saint Maverick Weller also did some good things forward, including nice a goal from long-range.

STILL MISSING

Key recruit Tom Lynch only completed some light work before the intra-club match, before leaving the field.

He remains in the Tigers’ rehabilitation group as he continues from a knee injury which has sidelined him since last July and will not feature in the club’s JLT Community Series pre-season matches but remains in the mix for Round 1.

“His agility’s improved out of sight and his running,” Leppitsch said.

“He’s doing contested work now so we feel he’s going to be around about the Round 1 mark … but if it’s not Round 1, it will be Round 2 I’m sure.”

Grigg (knee) is also unlikely to play any pre-season matches and completed only light duties before the intra-club match along with Jason Castagna (ankle).

Jack Riewoldt, Alex Rance and Jack Higgins all missed the hit out due to AFLX duties on Friday night.

only had 5 or 6 touches I reckon, kicked 1 nice dribbled goal, played mainly in defence

Midfield stars Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin both looked sharp as they led the 'yellow' team to a comfortable victory, while Daniel Rioli and Brandon Ellis were prominent in expanded midfield roles.

Bachar Houli was outstanding in defence for the 'black' team, along with David Astbury, while Jack Graham won plenty of the ball through the midfield.

Richmond's first two selections in last year's NAB AFL Draft, Riley Collier-Dawkins, No.20 overall, and Jack Ross, No.43, also played on Saturday.

Leppitsch praised both for their work around the contest, but said they still had to adapt to the speed of the game and AFL systems.

Grigg was among a group of Tigers who missed Saturday's practice match. Leppitsch said the 30-year-old remained on "lighter duties" due to a few niggles and was "touch and go" for round one.

Jason Castagna, Jacob Townsend and Ryan Garthwaite were restricted to running drills before the match, while Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt did not play on Saturday after appearing in the realestate.com.au AFLX tournament the night before.

I wish Chol showed a bit more mongrel in his game as he can do things that others his height can't. That one handed pick up after dropping the mark was just sublime.

Ok my obs..

Of the older brigade Cotch was moving beautifully. Looks super fit. Dusty too, clearly a class above. Both look set for massive years. Prestia & Lambert also excellent as ever. Rioli moved very well on the wing. Tick. Houli looks super fit & played really well..

Of the next tier.. J Graham, Ross & RCD all had their moments in the midfield. Impressive lads. Cal Moore was excellent up forward. Soldo was near best on. Continues to improve..genuine b/u option now. CCJ good in spurts. Balta some jaw dropping moments. Will feature this year..

Menadue had a great game IMO. Really worked hard. I'd play him in the JLT. Markov & Naish also did some good things. Baker also very prominent. Great energy from him today. Maybe small fwd.. Weller kicked goals he'll get another look too..Turner was quite good on the wing.

Chol was pretty good after a quiet start. Likely got a rocket. Good contests & 2nd efforts thereafter. Aarts some good stuff. Stack a bit quiet but kicked a super goal. Bolton too a little quiet for mine. Derek E-S is a good player.Some quality things. Miller too showed signs.

Overall it was a really solid hitout. I was surprised by how hard they went at it but this is a very competitive group & all are hungry for that round 1 spot cause it's going to be a tough team to break into. A heap of early positives though a long way to go obviously.

Tigers go head-to-head at intraclub

Richmond’s pre-season ramped up on Saturday morning with an intraclub contest at Punt Road Oval.

With less than four weeks remaining until Richmond’s season opener against Carlton, over a thousand members of the Yellow and Black faithful flocked to Tigerland to catch the boys in action.

The Tigers were split into two teams, Yellow and Black, and played four quarters of varying lengths.

While the first two quarters proved to be a tight contest, the Yellow team sailed away in the final two quarters to stamp a resounding 46-point victory, with the final scores 16.8 (104) to 9.4 (58).

Inside midfielder Dion Prestia opened proceedings with a snap out of traffic, sealing the first goal of the day for the Yellow side.

Daniel Rioli’s trademark tenacity was on full display as he hit the scoreboard on multiple occasions, his hard running and tackling paying dividends for the Yellow side. 

Kane Lambert also played a key role in the Yellow team’s success, dominating the midfield alongside smooth-moving captain Trent Cotchin.

The play of the day came from a seamless passage, starting with Mav Weller who handballed to Shane Edwards, to Lambert, to Dustin Martin and then Cotchin, with the skipper slotting through the major on the run.

Recruit Weller was influential up forward for the Yellow side as he converted several of his chances.

Richmond’s most recent addition, Sydney Stack, also produced some impressive plays for the Yellow side, most notably a high-flying mark and a dribble goal from the pocket.

The Black team was lifted by the efforts of Bachar Houli who was dangerous with ball in hand, and long-kicking Jayden Short who was influential in defence.

Jack Graham looked comfortable in possession for the Black side, indicating that he is ready to go after undergoing shoulder surgery at the end of the 2018 season.

Tiger talls Callum Coleman Jones (Black team) and Ivan Soldo (Yellow team) showcased the hard work they’ve put in over the pre-season as they push for upcoming selection.

Assistant coach Justin Leppitsch said the intraclub match offered a valuable pre-season hit-out.

“The end of the game blew out a little bit, we changed the teams around and pulled players out of positions which makes them uncomfortable, but for the most part the defensive system was really strong which is what we pride ourselves on,” he said.

Leppitsch noted the efforts of draftees Jack Ross and Riley Collier-Dawkins, and praised their work around the contest.

“It’s just getting used to the pace of the game for young players, and playing an AFL system, they’re two completely different styles of game, what you do at junior footy to what you do at the men’s game,” he said.

“I thought all in all, their efforts were terrific and their ball winning abilities were terrific.”

After snapping two goals for the Black side today, Leppitsch predicted utility Noah Balta could be an exciting prospect for 2019.

“He does some great things… he’s a big strong boy around the contest,” Leppitsh said.

“He’s only a second-year player but he looks like a 10-year player and he’s still learning the game.”
