U18 Championships: 20 young guns to watch

AFL.com.au
Callum Twomey
May 30, 2019

Noah Anderson

17/2/01
188cm/86kg
Vic Metro/Oakleigh Chargers
Midfielder

Anderson just turns up and performs every week. The midfielder pieced together an excellent start to the year in the NAB League, averaging 32 disposals and nearly three goals in the opening three rounds, before playing at school level. He is a tall midfielder with a very strong endurance base and a good presence overhead. Anderson also regularly hits the scoreboard, be it a long running goal, a mark on the lead or a snap around his body. Has some genuine flash to go with his consistency, and is a worthy candidate as a top-two pick.

Lachie Ash

21/6/01
186cm/80kg
Vic Country/Murray Bushrangers
Defender

Ash brings real speed to the draft crop. He's a line-breaker off half-back who is given the licence to thrill: he enjoys whipping the ball under his arm and taking the game forward. Ash doesn't run aimlessly – he's composed with the ball but adds plenty of excitement. Ash has played at senior level before – he won a country premiership with Shepparton last year – and finished second in the Murray Bushrangers' best and fairest last season.

Nick Bryan

22/10/01
202cm/87kg
Vic Metro/Oakleigh Chargers
Ruckman

Has come from the clouds to be the best ruckman in the draft class by some way. Bryan's form early this season – he averaged 25 hit-outs a game in the first three rounds for the Chargers – saw him win selection in the Australian under-18s team to face VFL side Casey Scorpions in April. Although lightly framed, Bryan's strengths lie in being an extra midfielder around the ground. He has good skills and game sense, and can also provide a marking option.

Thomson Dow

16/10/01
182cm/71kg
Vic Country/Bendigo Pioneers
Midfielder

The younger brother of Carlton's Paddy has taken the eye of recruiters this year. He is different to Paddy, playing a little bit taller and occasionally drifting forward to offer a target. Dow is lean but agile and with a burst, and started the season in strong form for the Pioneers, including a 28-disposal and two-goal effort against the Geelong Falcons in round one.

Sam Flanders

24/7/01
182cm/81kg
Vic Country/Gippsland Power
Forward/midfielder

Flanders has shown his best form as a powerful forward who can then take turns in the midfield. This season he has averaged 23 disposals, five tackles and a goal at NAB League level, and he's capable of doing some eye-catching things. Flanders has a mature build but is able to jump up and take a grab or cleanly collect the ball when it falls at the bottom of a pack.

Will Gould

14/1/01
191cm/98kg
South Australia/Glenelg
Defender

One of only three bottom-aged players selected for last year's under-18 All Australian team following his impressive carnival for South Australia. Gould has stepped up to play well at SANFL level, where his mature frame and booming kick is relied upon across half-back. He reads the game well and gives excellent rebound, and has been likened to West Coast skipper Shannon Hurn in his powerful style.

Tom Green

23/1/01
188cm/85kg
NSW-ACT/GWS Academy
Midfielder

Green starred for the Allies in their trial match with Vic Country on Sunday, showing again his ball-winning ability through the midfield 20 disposals and eight clearances. The Giants Academy prospect shapes as a possible top-10 selection due to his status as a big and strong inside midfielder who can bullock through traffic and set up the game from the midfield. He shed eight kilograms over the pre-season and is a better runner than he was last season, which has led to improved numbers. He should be one of the most productive midfielders at the championships.

Liam Henry

28/8/01
180cm/67kg
Claremont
Forward

Fremantle will get first access to Henry as a member of the club's Next Generation Academy. The lightly framed indigenous teenager is a lively small forward who kicked four goals from 24 disposals for Claremont's colts side last month in an exciting display. A minor knee injury has halted some of his progress, but some recruiters believe Henry could attract a top-20 bid if he continues at his current rate of development given his blistering speed and delightful skills.

Brodie Kemp

1/5/01
193cm/82kg
Vic Country/Bendigo Pioneers
Utility

Because of his size and ability, Kemp can play in most positions on the ground. He's been used as a marking forward, as a tall midfielder who extract the ball, and also across half-back where his vision stands out. Kemp isn't a huge ball-getter, but has plenty of upside and may end up a top-10 selection. Kemp is athletic and moves well, and is a player who could rocket up the ranks with a strong carnival.

Finn Maginness

23/2/01
187cm/80kg
Vic Metro/Sandringham Dragons
Midfielder

The son of two-time Hawthorn premiership player Scott Maginness has enjoyed a strong start to this season to push him into top-20 contention. Maginness is a tall midfielder who uses his size to bust through traffic, and he's one of the most improved players in the pool. He booted four goals in a quarter at school level last week for Scotch College in a dominant display and he has the athleticism to be a modern midfielder.

Will Martyn

29/3/01
183cm/73kg
Queensland/Brisbane Lions Academy
Midfielder

A hard-at-it midfield option who should perform well for the Allies. He's a natural ball-winner who led his team's possession count in Sunday's trial game against Vic Metro with 24 disposals and nine tackles. Works hard across the ground and was a standout for the Lions' Academy in its games in the NAB League, averaging 29 disposals and five tackles in five games. Brisbane will get priority access on him at the end of the year under the father-son/Academy bidding system.

Deven Robertson

30/6/01
182cm/80kg
Western Australia/Perth
Midfielder

Robertson played all four of WA's games last year as a bottom-ager and continued his development through the midfield. Earlier this month he had a 37-disposal and one-goal game against Claremont at colts level, and he has improved his athleticism to get to more contests. Robertson captained WA's under-16s side and was named its MVP at that championships, and is the nephew of former West Coast skipper Darren Glass.

Matthew Rowell

1/7/01
178cm/74kg
Vic Metro/Oakleigh Chargers
Midfielder

In all the big games Rowell has played in over the past year, he has lifted to the occasion. In the under-18 championship decider last season, he almost singlehandedly lifted Vic Metro off the canvas in the third quarter against South Australia. He then was named best afield in the TAC Cup Grand Final in a losing team, and won the medal the following week for the standout player in the NAB AFL All Stars game on Grand Final day, and in April was judged best on ground in the Australian under-18 team's win over the Casey Demons. Rowell is a tough, explosive midfielder who excels at the stoppages and wills himself on games. It's no wonder he's seen as the leading contender for the No.1 choice.

Caleb Serong

9/2/01
179cm/82kg
Vic Country/Gippsland Power
Forward/midfielder

Serong is a powerful small forward/midfielder who can influence a game in a number of ways. The talented cricketer is sharp at ground level and neat by foot, and is able to set up teammates with deft passes and clever ball use. He's crafty around goal, and when he's in the midfield has a burst of speed. Serong, who will co-captain Vic Country at the carnival, averaged 22 disposals and six tackles in his first two games of the NAB League season with Gippsland.

Jeremy Sharp

13/8/01
185cm/73kg
East Fremantle
Midfielder/defender

A slick prospect who performed well last year to be one of his state's leading draft hopefuls. Sharp was named an under-18 All Australian last season and was then a standout in the NAB All Stars game on Grand Final day across half-back. Sharp has good skills and dash, and made his senior WAFL debut for East Fremantle in round one this season.

Dylan Stephens

8/1/01
183cm/70kg
South Australia/Norwood
Midfielder

A strong engine, combined with a turn of pace and a classy left foot make Stephens one of the more desirable midfielders available. Stephens, who grew up in country Victoria before moving to South Australia for school, has played for Norwood at senior level this season but will take on more responsibility for SA's under-18 season. Models his game on Greater Western Sydney star Josh Kelly.

Cameron Taheny

3/8/01
185cm/80kg
South Australia/Norwood
Forward

Taheny has his 'wow' moments: he's dynamic and exciting and as a forward can produce anything from nothing. The 17-year-old has played at senior level for SANFL side Norwood and has performed well, booting five goals from three games, despite some injury niggles with his knee and quad. Has speed and a leap and will be someone to watch from South Australia.

Josh Worrell

11/4/01
195cm/74kg
Vic Metro/Sandringham Dragons
Key defender

The way Worrell is able to float into marking contests in the back half and make an impact in the air should bode well at AFL level as a third tall defender. Worrell's leap and agility, plus his versatility, should appeal to clubs, particularly given there is a lack of taller types at the top end of this year's draft. Has also been tried in the ruck at school level this year but is most comfortable setting things up in the backline.

Dylan Williams

1/7/01
185cm/79kg
Vic Metro/Oakleigh Chargers
Forward

Williams showed his talent last year for the Chargers when he booted 14 goals in their finals series. When in attack Williams is a threat in the air, where his marking is a real strength, and also on the ground, given his savviness near goal and sharp left foot. He has also been used across half-back, where his reading of the play comes to the fore, and at times in bursts through the midfield. If Williams is having a quiet day he will often find a way to impact a game, and he has genuine X-factor and ability.

Hayden Young

11/4/01
188cm/82kg
Vic Country/Dandenong Stingrays
Defender

Young looked every bit the early pick at the MCG against the Casey Scorpions VFL side when he gathered 17 disposals and six marks in a polished performance. He has at times played in the midfield this year but looks most comfortable and is more damaging across half-back, where his vision, poise and precise kicking stands out. Young, whose brother Lachie made his debut recently with the Western Bulldogs, is a good size and considered a leader within his group.

Really like to see us trade for higher picks pref top 5-10 this year if we can ...would actually rather do that than get an established player if it came down to either/or .... :shh

Top-five draft prospects shine as U18 Championships kick off

AFL.com.au
Callum Twomey
Jun 2, 2019

POTENTIAL top-five pick Hayden Young has steered Vic Country to a strong 13-point win over Vic Metro in the opening game of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Young had a game-high 29 disposals playing across half-back in Country's 9.10 (64) to 7.9 (51) victory at the MCG on Saturday ahead of the Collingwood and Fremantle clash.

The Dandenong Stingrays prospect, who is Country's vice-captain, was excellent with his left-foot disposal out of defence, recording seven rebound-50s and seven marks.

He is considered a likely early selection at November's NAB AFL Draft, having also played well for the Australian under-18 side in its game at the MCG against VFL side Casey Scorpions in April.

Country midfielder Caleb Serong was also terrific in the win, finding 22 disposals and having five clearances, while Lachie Ash's dash (21 disposals) out of defence was eye-catching.

Small forward Ned Cahill chipped in with two clever goals from 16 disposals, the bustling Josh Smith booted three, while Sam Flanders showed his power and burst through the midfield and in attack with 21 disposals and a goal.

Midfielders Jay Rantall (21), Ryan Sparkes (19) and Thomson Dow (18), the younger brother of Carlton's Paddy, were also strong contributors in the win, which was something of a surprise given Metro's star-studded midfield.

Metro went into the game considered favourites and its top-end players lived up to the billing.

Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson, the likely top two picks at this year's draft, were busy. Rowell had 28 disposals (a game-high 11 were contested), while Anderson collected 25 and laid eight tackles to go with his five clearances.

Metro led at quarter-time by one point but Country kept its opponents goalless in the pivotal second term to take a 12-point lead into half-time that it never relinquished thereafter.

Louis Butler was handy for Metro off half-back with 24 disposals and seven rebound-50s, Darcy Cassar had some nice moments (16 disposals and a goal) and tall forward Charlie Dean showed his forward craft but was unable to convert his opportunities.

BEST
Western Australia: Robertson, L. Jackson, Garcia, Rivers, Warner, Pasini
Vic Metro: Worrell, Rowell, Mott, Sturgess, Butler, McAsey

----------------------------------------------

STAR midfielder Deven Robertson led the way as Western Australia accounted for Vic Metro by 17 points in their round one match of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Robertson, the state captain and nephew of former West Coast skipper Darren Glass, had a match-high 31 disposals, as well as seven clearances, five rebound 50s and four inside 50s in a dominant display.

Teammate Luke Jackson was the dominant ruckman on the ground, controlling the contest with 35 hitouts, 12 disposals and six clearances.

Forward/midfielder Liam Henry, who is a member of Fremantle's Next Generation Academy, kicked three goals from 14 touches and laid six tackles.

It was a second loss for Vic Metro this year, who also fell to cross-state rival Vic Country last weekend.

Highly rated draft prospect Matt Rowell was one of Metro's best, recording 24 disposals, eight clearances, six inside 50s and a goal.

Josh Worrell (18 disposals, six marks and four goals) is usually found in defence, but the Vic Metro big man was his side's best while shining in the forward line.

Daniel Mott also played well in the middle for Metro, finishing with 24 disposals, eight clearances and seven marks.

'Robbie Gray clone' shines as Vic Country thumps Allies

AFL.com.au
Jonathan Healy
Jun 9, 2019 4:35PM

ALLIES              0.2         0.4         1.6         2.7 (19)
VIC COUNTRY    4.1         9.2         12.4       18.8 (116)

GOALS
Allies: Barling, Cumberland
Vic Country: Weightman 4, Serong 3, Martin 3, Rantall 2, Williams, Sparkes, Wild, Smith, Cahill, Dow

BEST
Allies: O'Neill, Murray, Green, Griffiths, Budarick
Vic Country: Serong, Kemp, Ash, Baldi, Young, Weightman, Clark

---------------------------------------------------------

HIGHLY-RATED midfielder Caleb Serong produced a brilliant individual performance as Vic Country remained unbeaten at this year's NAB AFL Under-18 Championships with a 97-point thumping of the Allies at UTAS Stadium on Sunday.

Serong showed his class as he collected 22 disposals, seven marks, six tackles and three goals as Vic Country registered an easy 18.8 (116) to 2.7 (19) victory.

Vic Country failed to pick up a win at the 2018 Championships, but have already shown they are an improved side this year as they followed up last week's upset victory over Vic Metro with an easy triumph over the Allies in Launceston.

And it was the class of Serong that proved pivotal in the win, as the Vic Country co-captain - who has been likened to Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray - shone for a second consecutive week.

Serong had plenty of helpers, with Lachie Ash (29 disposals) and Riley Baldi (29 touches and 13 marks) also winning plenty of the ball and Bendigo Pioneers product Brodie Kemp (20 possessions and 10 marks) dominant down back.

Small forward Cody Weightman also chipped in with four goals.

The Allies failed to score a goal during the opening half and only managed their second major midway through the final quarter when the game was well and truly over.

GWS Academy player and top-10 draft prospect Tom Green battled hard for the Allies to finish with 18 disposals and nine clearances, while Tasmanian local Mitchell O'Neill (26 touches) found plenty of the ball.

But it was all in vain as an impressive Vic Country outfit made it two wins from as many matches in 2019 with another excellent showing.

Defending U18 champions SA open account in thriller over WA

WESTERN AUSTRALIA   1.2   2.4   3.6   4.11 (35)
SOUTH AUSTRALIA       1.1   2.2   6.3    7.4 (46)

Western Australia: Sharp, Taylor, Thorne, Garcia
South Australia: Taheny 2, Mead, Park, Tucker, Pickett, Durdin

Western Australia: TBC
South Australia: TBC

-----------------------------------------------

CLASSY midfielder Dylan Stephens strengthened his case as a likely first-round draft pick after leading South Australia to a hard-earned 11-point victory over Western Australia on Saturday.

In slippery conditions at Optus Stadium, the visitors broke the game open with a four-goal-to-one third term and hung on as the inaccurate Sandgropers surged home in the final quarter, eventually running out 7.4 (46) to 4.11 (35) winners.

Stephens powered the Croweaters' engine room, racking up 23 touches with five inside 50s as the defending NAB AFL Under-18s champions opened their carnival on the right note.

Stephens' Norwood clubmate Cameron Taheny (two goals) was dangerous and the game's only multiple goalkicker, while SA captain Will Gould was rock-solid across half-back, finishing with 21 disposals and nine rebound 50s.

Kysaiah Pickett, the nephew of Norm Smith medallist Byron, didn't find much of the footy (six possessions) in attack but showed remarkable vision and ability to conjure space from tight confines.

He provided the match's highlight during the third term, when he tapped the ball to himself near the boundary line, picked up and threw the ball on his left boot for a miraculous major.

WA captain Deven Robertson backed up his stellar first outing in a win over Vic Metro last Saturday with 32 disposals, eight tackles and five inside 50s.

The Perth inside midfielder and lively Swan Districts onballer Riley Garcia (28 disposals, eight clearances, one goal) combined brilliantly with dominant ruck Luke Jackson.

Garcia's clever goal early in the last term reduced the margin to nine points but the home side couldn’t kick straight and five behinds in a row ended their chances of a comeback win.

Jackson's workrate was outstanding all game and the former basketball star finished with 35 hitouts, 14 touches and five clearances.

Liam Henry showed some dazzling foot skills against SA. Picture: Michael Farnell/WAFC

Fremantle Next Generation Academy product Liam Henry and outside runner Jeremy Sharp (19 disposals each) looked a class above with their piercing foot skills, and Sharp's dazzling sidestep and opening goal for WA from 50m would have impressed recruiters in the grandstands.

WA had 15 inside 50s to eight in the first quarter and won the overall count 46-35 but couldn't take advantage on the scoreboard.

U18: Potential No.1 pick stars as Metro post first win

AFL.com.au
Sarah Black
Jun 23, 2019

TOP-RATED draft prospects Noah Anderson and Matt Rowell dominated as Vic Metro broke through for its first win of the NAB Under-18 Championships, defeating South Australia by 17 points.

Metro had lost its first two games to Vic Country and Western Australia, but a five-goal third term proved to be the difference in the 9.13 (67) to 7.8 (50) win at Alberton Oval in South Australia.

Anderson recorded 27 disposals, seven inside 50s and two goals in a strong display, while teammate Rowell had 26, seven marks and four clearances.

After four goals against Western Australia, Josh Worrell followed up with a three-goal haul, while Jack Mahony was constructive with 22 touches and eight inside 50s.

South Australian Harry Schoenberg led the stats sheet for his side with 29 disposals, eight clearances and seven marks, and was ably supported by Jackson Mead (25, nine tackles, seven inside-50s).

Brady Searle kicked two goals, while Joshua Shute had strong hands, taking 10 marks to go with his 19 touches.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

In the early game, West Australian skipper Deven Robertson's strong championships continued in his state's 25-point win over the Allies.

Midfielder Robertson had 30 disposals and eight tackles in the 10.8 (68) to 5.13 (43) win.

Elijah Taylor and small forward Tyrone Thorne kicked three goals each, while Jaxon Prior worked the ball out of defence, finishing with 18 disposals, six rebound 50s and five marks.

The Allies will be ruing missed opportunities in front of goal, with Gold Coast academy player Joshua Gore the only one to kick multiple majors.

Tasmania's Mitchell O'Neill had the most ball of his Allies teammates, finishing with 24 touches, six marks and five clearances, while GWS academy player Tom Green (20 disposals, eight clearances) was busy in the middle.

ALLIES                          3.4     3.8     3.11     5.13     (43)

A DETERMINED Allies outfit has held off a fast-finishing Vic Metro to record their first win of the NAB Under-18 Championships, scraping home by two points at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong on Friday.

Highly-rated draft prospects Tom Green (Allies) and Noah Anderson (Vic Metro) were dominant for their respective sides, with the Allies' five-goal-to-one third quarter denying Metro a second win at this year's championships.

Straight kicking was a feature of the first half in a tight contest, with the Allies ahead by a point at half-time.

The Allies flew out of the blocks in the third quarter, hitting the scoreboard with four majors as Metro struggled to stem the flow. Metro turned the tables in the final term with four goals of their own before the Allies responded and held on to win.

Potential No.1 pick Matt Rowell was strong around the contest for Vic Metro, recording 22 disposals, 12 tackles and six clearances. Fellow top prospect Anderson overcame a quiet start to have an influence in the second half (24 disposals, seven clearances, five inside 50s).

Finn Maginness, son of two-time premiership Hawk Scott, was ferocious in the middle for Metro with 27 touches, nine tackles and seven clearances.

Allies midfielder and GWS Academy prospect Green was prolific, leading his side on the stats sheet (33 disposals, nine clearances) and showing why the ball magnet is considered a likely top-10 pick.

Green, Ben Jungfer (16 disposals, six clearances) and Errol Gulden (17 disposals) were standouts in the middle for the Allies. By contrast, Metro spread the load more evenly with eight players having 15 or more touches.

Sandringham Dragons product Fischer McAsey was prolific for Metro, racking up 19 disposals, seven marks and six rebound 50s.

Both sides were served well in the ruck, the Allies' over-ager Ben Kelly (28 hitouts) standing up well against Metro's Nick Bryan (29 hitouts), who is widely regarded as the best ruck prospect in this year's crop.

The loss was Vic Metro's final match of the championships with the bye next week, while the Allies take on reigning champions South Australia at Marvel Stadium in the final round.

DYLAN Stephens continued to enhance his draft reputation, leading South Australia to a comfortable victory in the final game of the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

The possible top-10 pick, who has drawn comparisons to West Coast midfielder Andrew Gaff, was prolific as South Australia comfortably overcame the Allies at Marvel Stadium.

South Australia controlled the contest for the majority of the afternoon, withstanding an improved second-half performance from the Allies to claim a 17-point victory.

Stephens finished with 33 disposals, nine clearances and six tackles in a dominant display, starring alongside powerful defender Will Gould.

The 191cm half-back, who has a raking right-foot kick, also saw plenty of the footy and finished with 25 disposals and six marks.

For the Allies, potential Giants draftee Tom Green was again among the best.

The club's Academy member has been touted as a potential top-five draft pick and starred on the inside, winning 23 disposals, six clearances and seven tackles.

FREMANTLE recruiters watched eagerly as potential Dockers draftee Liam Henry starred to lead Western Australia to a shock NAB AFL Under-18 Championships title on Wednesday.

Henry, a classy 179cm midfielder who is eligible to head to Fremantle at season's end as part of its Next Generation Academy, was a clear standout as Western Australia ended its 10-year Championships drought at Marvel Stadium with victory over Vic Country.

Western Australia, who knew that only a win would seal an unlikely carnival triumph, appeared destined to throw away a 31-point lead when it fell behind late in the match.

However, a composed set-shot from Regan Clarke with the final kick of the game secured Western Australia's dramatic five-point win and the state's first national title since 2009.

Henry, a skilful onballer who recruiters believe has shot into first-round calculations this season, produced an influential performance to inspire his side's impressive victory.

He won 25 disposals and took six marks, starring in tandem with Western Australian captain and fellow first-round prospect Deven Robertson before moving forward late.

While he squandered three separate opportunities to seal the match during his stint in attack, Henry's evasiveness and composure was a highlight throughout the game.

Robertson, another potential first-round draft pick, also continued his impressive campaign.

The likely Larke Medal winner for the competition's best player, the 182cm midfielder finished with 28 disposals, six clearances and eight tackles in another impressive showing.

It continued a carnival where Robertson – who claimed the side's MVP award – had won more than 30 disposals in each of his side's previous three Championships games.

Potential top-10 pick Brodie Kemp had inspired Vic Country's gallant second-half comeback, winning 17 disposals before pushing into attack and kicking two important late goals.

Dashing defensive duo Lachie Ash and Hayden Young were also promising, with each winning 22 disposals and displaying plenty of their trademark drive off half-back.
