How Richmond "puts fear into the opposition", according to King and RiewoldtBy SEN
13 May 2019Former North Melbourne premiership player David King says Richmond’s gusty win over Fremantle yesterday showed why the opposition should fear the Tigers.
Richmond won by 25 points at Optus Stadium without Trent Cotchin, Alex Rance, Jack Riewoldt, Daniel Rioli, Nick Vlastuin, Shaun Grigg, Jayden Short, Jack Graham as well as Jack Ross and Toby Nankervis, who went down during the game.
King was impressed with how the Tigers were able to pull through for the victory.
“They just mauled them,” he told SEN’s Whateley.
“Ross Lyon talked about their (Richmond’s) ability to hunt, they hunted.
“Wherever the ball fell, they were just swarming onto it.
“When they pick up the ball, they strike with such power.
“Those first three to four steps, everyone that takes possession bursts.
“It puts fear into the opposition straight away.”
Former St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt says the key to Richmond’s wins this season has been a simplified game plan.
“Sometimes when you have a team that’s changed so much as Richmond does, the role’s just become really simplified for some of these young players,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“Rather than having to come in and learn the whole defensive system of Rance and (David) Astbury and (Dylan) Grimes and (Nathan) Broad and all these guys who have had a long period of time to play in, you just dumb it down.
“You simplify it, go and beat this bloke, go and beat your man, and Richmond again, they just found a way to get it done.”
The Tigers will aim to back up their win against the Dockers when they host Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday.
