“Get it done”: Nick Riewoldt's 3am pitch to become a Tiger

St Kilda great Nick Riewoldt has recalled a story involving he, Alex Rance and an inebriated voicemail to Richmond’s head of recruitment.

It was 3am in Tasmania at Jack Riewoldt’s wedding in late 2017 when the champion Saint and premiership Tiger Rance decided to make a pitch to get the five-time All-Australian to Punt Road.

“I thought fleetingly about potentially a year somewhere else,” Riewoldt told SEN’s Whateley.

“At 3am, Alex Rance and I called up Richmond’s head of recruiting and left a voicemail, I think it was a six-minute voicemail which he might still have, talking about how I should come across to Tigerland for just one year and play in the forward line with Jack (Riewoldt).

“I’d played on Rancey about a month before the end of the season and played pretty well on him. I was pleading my case and Rancey was endorsing it saying: ‘He did this when he played, and he did that. The proof and the body of work’s there – let’s get it done’.

“Then we just forgot about it the next day. I think within the first 15 seconds of the voicemail he would have realised what was happening.

“They went and got Tom Lynch, so they did a bit better there.”

Riewoldt retired at the end of the 2017 season after a decorated 336-game career with St Kilda.
