It’s all my fault we lost.
First game I’ve been to since covid.
:banghead :help :wallywink :facepalm
Na, it’s my fault, I didn’t wear my lucky Tigers socks.

RICHMOND

The Tigers may have sunk to a fifth loss in six games but there’s plenty to take away from the 20-point defeat to Melbourne. Richmond were on top in the first half as they dominated a star-studded Demons midfield – but ill-discipline and wasted opportunities ensured they didn’t put their good work onto the scoreboard. And when Melbourne’s “ferocious” pressure came in the third term, the young Tiger cubs couldn’t go with them. In pleasing signs for coach Adem Yze, Richmond didn’t roll over and instead kicked the final four goals of the match. They finished even for clearances despite having almost 100 less disposals.

In the votes

Tim Taranto tried to lift his side and finished with 22 disposals – 11 of them contested, three clearances and two goals. Nick Vlastuin still had 11 intercepts – despite a few horror moments exiting defence that proved costly on the scoreboard. Despite Melbourne’s second half dominance, Richmond still finished equal for centre clearance in a big win for Adem Yze’s young side.

Room for improvement

Toby Nankervis (15 disposals, eight clearances and a goal) was overrun by Demons skipper Max Gawn in the end. The Richmond captain was admirable in the first half, but when the Melbourne ruck found another gear, no one could match him. Simple skill errors continued to cost Richmond goals – Maurice Rioli Jnr (just four touches) was a chief offender as he coughed up an off the ball free kick that Harry Petty converted, breaking the Tigers’ momentum and run of three straight goals. In the last quarter with the game out of reach, Fox Footy experts questioned why we didn’t see Sam Lalor injected into the midfield for experience – given he had just 10 disposals for the match.
