CLUBS PUSH RADICAL ‘MARQUEE PLAYER’ PLAN

Several Victorian clubs have launched a push for a “marquee player” system that would see two top players per team paid outside the salary cap, reports the Herald Sun.

During the AFL’s shut down period, the players agreed to a 50 per cent pay cut, with those at the top of the tree being hit hard the most.

Leading player agent Colin Young said clubs had indicated interest in the radical move, which would bring extra revenue into the game.

“I’ve had several conversations with a couple of clubs that would like to see marquee players introduced,” Young told the Herald Sun.

“Even if it’s just during this period of the next three years where we are rebuilding the industry.”

It was suggested benefactors and businessmen had already been identified that could provide funding.

The AFL has previously moved to shut down any player payments outside the salary cap.

League headquarters ensured ex-Blues superstar Chris Judd’s external payments from Visy were eventually put under Carlton’s salary cap, while any flagged third party payments to Gary Ablett in 2018 were blocked.

Wed be a huge winner under a marquee system
Dustys 1.3 comes out of the cap then probably Lynch at say $1.0 a year and thats $2.3 million out of the cap. A huge benefit for us if it happens. We could target another 2 superstars

hard to target anyone and still take 3 in the draft when HQ is about to slash lists from 45 to they are saying 35

Money may not be in the Cap but they are still part of the primary list

Would work a treat if the list weren't getting cut

Player agent Colin Young told News Corp during the week that a couple of clubs would like to see the introduction of marquee players who could be paid outside the salary cap in light of the financial struggles the league will face as a result of the pandemic.

But Richmond's Neil Balme said that idea didn’t make much sense to him.

“It seems contrary to most things we’re trying to do,” he said.

“I do see, though, the reality now is that the world has changed, the finances will change, the TV deal could well change and the deal that the players have negotiated relates to the TV deal, et cetera, et cetera.

“So all sorts of things will change, but you do feel for the guys who have signed the longer-term contracts and all of a sudden someone’s going to come back and say, ‘Sorry mate, that doesn’t work anymore’.”
