RICHMOND coach Damien Hardwick has urged the Tigers tighten up their discipline after Josh Caddy's costly 50-metre penalty in the reigning premiers' loss to Port Adelaide.

The Tigers held a one-point lead over the Power at three-quarter time of the Adelaide Oval clash but were blown away with three quick goals at the start of the final term to succumb to the Power by 21 points.

One of those goals to Power midfielder Tom Rockliff came courtesy of two 50-metre penalties from the Tigers, the second of which was an infringement against dual premiership Tiger Caddy for running in the protected area.

The Tigers gave away 22 free kicks and were awarded 11, and Hardwick said his side needed to get into line. 

"The 50-metre [penalties] are disappointing, there's no doubt. We ask our guys to play to the line and sometimes they're going to step over it. But they'll address it. Our leaders will sit down and sort that out. We've got to be better in that area," he said post game.

"Free kicks against we're always relatively poor in that part of the game, and a lot of it is because of the way we play but we've got to probably tighten up a little bit from a discipline point of view."

Port Adelaide kept Richmond goalless in the final term, with the Caddy penalty coming at a crucial time as the Power began their surge. Hardwick admitted the 27-year-old needed to be better.

"That's a disappointing one obviously and hopefully Josh learns from it. It was just poor, really poor," he said. 

Richmond was smashed in the midfield battle with Port Adelaide, but will regain captain Trent Cotchin against Gold Coast on Monday week after he was rested for the trip to South Australia.

Hinkley was unwilling to talk up his club's achievement but his Richmond counterpart Damien Hardwick was less circumspect.

"They were very, very good," Hardwick said of Port.

"I love the way they play. They attack the game.

"If I sit there and look at one of the sides I would pay money to watch, they would be one of those sides."

Port thrice repelled Richmond fightbacks in a pressure-packed encounter.

The Tigers, playing after a four-day break, didn't score at all in the final term but coach Hardwick dismissed the short gap between games as a factor.

"We were really happy with effort and intent ... I didn't detect our energy levels went down," Hardwick said.
